Overview Manuals Common Applications Product Precautions
The 1771-NIS/B is an 8-channel analog current input module belonging to the legacy PLC-5 platform. It accommodates standard 4 to 20 mA signal loops and features flexible wiring compatibility to interface with both sinking and sourcing field configurations. The module provides sufficient onboard current distribution to directly energize connected 2-wire field transmitters, simplifying external loop power requirements.
    • High Channel-to-Channel Isolation and Noise Suppression
    • High 16-Bit Digital Conversion Precision
    • Integrated Loop Power Distribution
The module possesses a continuous signal processing window spanning 0.1 to 21 mA, with built-in digital thresholds that register under-range states below 3.2 mA and over-range anomalies up to 21 mA. Signal digitization is carried out via a high-resolution, 16-bit unipolar converter that delivers a fine grain size of 330 nA per least significant bit (LSB). Physical inputs exhibit a maximum input impedance of 300 ohms and carry robust 24V DC overvoltage protection alongside a diagnostic routine that detects open field circuits within a maximum threshold of 5 seconds.

For high-noise industrial deployments, the 1771-NIS features advanced physical filtering that suppresses electrical interference, achieving a normal mode rejection ratio (NMRR) of 50 to 60 dB and a typical common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) of 150 dB. The internal input channels maintain a physical frequency bandwidth of 9 Hz, allowing the complete module to cycle and update all field channel values within a maximum time of 25 milliseconds. Long-term operational precision is maintained via low thermal vulnerabilities, showing a minimal offset drift coefficient of ±200 nA/°C and a gain drift factor limited to ±95 ppm/°C.

Petrochemical & Refining
Measures precise 4-20 mA signals from custody transfer flowmeters and core pipeline pressure transmitters to track mass balances accurately.

Thermal Power
Monitors continuous analog temperature and pressure loops in boiler steam drums to adjust combustion control parameters in real time.

Chemical Processing
Captures minute weight variations from reactor vessel load cells to manage strict chemical batch ratio formulations.

Iron & Steel Metallurgy
Monitors cooling water flow rates for blast furnace jackets to prevent dangerous hot spots and thermal structural failure.

Oil & Gas Extraction
Deployed on offshore drilling platform manifolds to track choke valve position feedback and multiphase flow pressure.

Pulp & Paper Mills
Tracks basis-weight sensor inputs and pulp slurry consistency along the high-speed paper machine press section.
Since the module draws an exceptionally high backplane current of 2.9 Amperes from the 1771 chassis, the remaining capacity of the rack power supply must be strictly calculated during system configuration to prevent overload. It does not support standard mechanical wiring arms and must be connected to a Remote Terminal Panel (RTP) via a dedicated 1771-NC cable to complete the field 4-20mA current loop wiring. Additionally, because the entire PLC-5 platform has been completely discontinued, hot-swapping the module is strictly prohibited, and stock management for critical spares should be established.

Technical notes

Technical notes

This module is an Allen-Bradley 1771 N-Series high-resolution analog input module tailored for PLC-5 control platforms. It provides 8 isolated current input channels with zero output capacity, demanding a 2.9 A backplane current from the chassis. For seamless communication with the controller, the processed field signals are represented in either BCD or Natural Binary data format.

FAQS

  • What type of industrial automation module is the 1771-NIS/B?
The 1771-NIS/B is a high-resolution, channel-to-channel isolated analog input module for the Allen-Bradley PLC-5 platform.
  • How do you use the 1771-NIS/B module in a system?
You slot it into a standard 1771 I/O chassis, wire field transmitters to its arm, and configure Block Transfer Read/Write instructions in the PLC logic.
  • What type of industrial signals can the 1771-NIS/B process?
It processes standard analog signals including 4-20 mA current loops, as well as 1-5V, 0-5V, and ±10V voltage inputs.
  • What is the input resolution of the 1771-NIS/B module?
It features a high resolution of 16 bits, allowing extremely precise digital conversion of continuous process signals.
  • Why is the channel-to-channel isolation of the 1771-NIS/B important?
It stops electrical noise, ground loops, and high-voltage transients on one field channel from disrupting or damaging other channels.
