The AF70982 111-412-000-012 is an API 670-compliant, TQ412 series intrinsically safe (Ex i) reverse-mount eddy current proximity transducer. It features a 3/8"-24UNF imperial stainless steel body combined with a Torlon wide-temperature advanced engineering plastic tip, providing a high protection rating of IP68.

The Vibro-Meter AF70982 111-412-000-012 proximity system allows contactless measurement of the relative displacement of moving machine elements. It is particularly suitable for measuring the relative vibration and axial position of rotating machine shafts, such as those found in steam, gas and hydraulic turbines, as well as in alternators, turbo-compressors and pumps. The system is based around a TQ 412 non-contact transducer (specifically designed for reverse-mount applications) and an IQS 450 signal conditioner. Together, these form a calibrated proximity system in which each component is interchangeable.
The system outputs a voltage or current proportional to the distance between the transducer tip and the target, such as a machine shaft. The active part of the transducer is a coil of wire that is moulded inside the tip of the device, made of Torlon. The transducer body is made of stainless steel with an imperial thread. The target material must, in all cases, be metallic.
The AF70982 111-412-000-012 has an integral coaxial cable, terminated with a self-locking miniature coaxial connector. It can be matched with a single EA 402 extension cable to effectively lengthen the front-end to a calibrated total system length. The IQS 450 signal conditioner contains a high-frequency modulator / demodulator that supplies a driving signal to the transducer to generate the necessary electromagnetic field used to measure the gap. The conditioner circuitry is made of high-quality components and is mounted in an aluminium extrusion.

When using the AF70982 111-412-000-012 eddy-current displacement sensor, it is critical to precisely adjust the initial mechanical gap to the linear midpoint voltage (typically -10V DC) via a dedicated reverse-mount bracket. During installation and operation, the Torlon probe tip must be strictly protected from physical impacts, and the target shaft surface must be smooth, scratch-free, and perfectly match the factory material calibration (typically AISI 4140 steel).
Furthermore, the miniature coaxial connector at the cable end must be fitted with an insulating protective sleeve to prevent accidental grounding against the machine casing or shaft, and the total electrical cable length of the complete system (probe, extension cable, and conditioner) must match strictly.
