The 1747-L542 is an industrial central processing unit hardware module manufactured by Allen-Bradley under the Rockwell Automation brand with the official product classification of SLC 5/04 Modular Controller. Within the product lineup this hardware belongs to the classic SLC 500 Series programmable logic controller system used to execute ladder logic programming in mid-sized industrial automation control networks.
EtherNet I/P Adapter (1747-AENTR) available to convert an existing system to distributed I/O
Flexible options for Analogue and Digital I/O cards to modify and expand system capabilities
Wide range of replacement power supplies, chassis, communications modules, I/O cards and accessories available
The 1747-L542 module contains a user program memory with a capacity of 32K words and a 1747-BA lithium battery assembly to sustain non-volatile RAM data retention under powered off conditions. In terms of interfaces and control architecture the panel and interior of this hardware module include a proprietary Data Highway Plus network communication port and a standard RS-232 serial communication port supporting DF1 and ASCII protocols. It also contains a physical keyswitch to control three operating modes and a built-in real-time clock calendar chip along with a set of LED status indicators to demonstrate CPU status and network communication activities.
This SLC 5/04 processor may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power Company beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the original manufacturer.

Automotive Assembly Manufacturing
Used in distributed control systems for body stamping shops or final assembly conveyors, coordinating welding robot logic via DH+ networks.
Water Treatment & Pumping Stations
Controls filter backwashing, chemical dosing systems, and interlocking start-stops of large water pumps, enabling centralized monitoring of pressure and flow.
Food & Beverage Packaging
Applied in stand-alone cabinets for high-speed filling lines, labeling machines, and palletizers to execute sensor counting, limit triggering, and sequential valve control.
Iron & Steel Post-Processing
Used in transport systems for cold rolling, shearing lines, and continuous annealing furnaces to control roller speed matching and precise sheet positioning.
Cement & Aggregate Conveying
Manages interlocking protection systems for large belt conveyors and bucket elevators in cement clinker lines, preventing material accumulation and alarming belt misalignment.
Pulp & Paper Processing
Controls pulp refiners, mixing chests, and slitter-cutter peripherals, handling bulk discrete I/O and consolidating chassis status to the central control room.
Cut power before handling 1747-L542. Replace 1747-BA battery under power or within 30 minutes post-shutdown to avoid RAM data loss. Prevent abnormal voltage on DH+ port.
1747-L542 features a built-in 3-pin Data Highway Plus (DH+) port. This port supports network communication at 57.6 Kbps, 115.2 Kbps, or 230.4 Kbps, and connects other SLC 5/04 or PLC-5 controllers and HMI operator interfaces.
It is an SLC 5/04 modular controller processor unit manufactured by Allen-Bradley.
