The 1746-NIO4V is a SLC 500 analog combination I/O module that contains two current or voltage inputs and two voltage outputs. It resides in any available slot of a 1746 I/O chassis, except slot 0, and provides 500V DC isolation between the I/O signals and the backplane.
Analog Combination Design
14-Bit High Resolution
Flexible Input Configuration
This module features 14-bit resolution for both inputs and outputs, supporting input ranges of ±10V DC or 0 to 20 mA and a voltage output range of ±10V DC. Input types are individually selectable via DIP switches located on the side of the module, and it requires a backplane current draw of 55 mA at 5V DC and 115 mA at 24V DC.

Power Generation
Controls fuel valve actuators and monitors turbine temperature or pressure sensors. The module provides precise 14-bit resolution for maintaining stable voltage and current levels in power distribution.
Oil and Gas
Monitors flow transmitters and pressure transducers in refinery and pipeline systems. It supports ±10V DC or 0 to 20 mA inputs to interface with standard field instrumentation.
Water Treatment
Regulates chemical dosing pumps and monitors water quality sensors across municipal facilities. It allows for simultaneous analog input monitoring and output control within a single chassis slot.
Automotive Manufacturing
Interfaces with position sensors and variable speed drives on automated assembly lines. The high-speed analog processing ensures accurate feedback for robotic welding and painting systems.
Metal Processing
Manages furnace temperature control and hydraulic press position feedback in smelting plants. It features 500V DC isolation to protect the system backplane from industrial electrical noise.
Food and Beverage
Controls proportional valves and monitors tank levels for automated batching and mixing. This ensures consistent product quality through precise adjustment of voltage-driven actuators.
The 1746-NIO4V requires a backplane current draw of 55 mA at 5V DC and 115 mA at 24V DC, and users must set the DIP switches located on the side of the module to select between voltage or current for each input channel before installation.
During wiring, it is mandatory to use Belden 8761 or equivalent shielded twisted-pair cable to ensure signal integrity and to follow Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) precautions by wearing a grounding wrist strap to prevent internal damage to the circuit boards. The module provides 500V DC isolation between the I/O signals and the backplane, but the individual I/O channels are not isolated from each other, requiring careful consideration of common-mode voltage limits.
To ensure proper operation, the voltage outputs must drive a minimum load impedance of 2K ohms with a maximum load current of 5 mA, and all chassis power must be removed before inserting or removing the module to avoid potential injury or equipment damage.
What is the channel configuration for the 1746-NIO4V analog combination module?
The 1746-NIO4V module contains two current or voltage inputs and two voltage outputs, which are individually selectable and configured using the module's DIP switches.
What are the backplane current requirements for the 1746-NIO4V at 5V and 24V DC?
The module has a backplane current draw of 55 mA at 5V DC and 115 mA at 24V DC, which must be accounted for in the chassis power supply loading.
How are the input and output ranges defined for the 1746-NIO4V module?
The module supports input ranges of ±10V DC or 0 to 20 mA, and provides voltage output ranges of ±10V DC, with a resolution of 14 bits for inputs and 14 bits for outputs.
What type of cable is recommended for wiring the 1746-NIO4V analog signals?
Use Belden 8761 or equivalent shielded twisted-pair cable to ensure signal integrity and reduce the effects of electrical noise on the analog signals.
Is there any isolation between the channels on the 1746-NIO4V module?
The 1746-NIO4V provides 500V DC isolation between the backplane and the I/O signals, but the individual I/O channels are not isolated from each other.
