The 1746-NR4 is a RTD module receives and stores digitally converted analog data from RTDs or other resistance inputs such as potentiometers into its image table for retrieval by all fixed and modular SLC 500 processors.
High-Density 4-Channel Design
Universal Sensor Compatibility
Lead-Wire Resistance Compensation
An RTD consists of a temperature-sensing element connected by 2, 3 or 4 wires that provide input to the RTD module. The module supports connections from any combination of up to four RTDs of various types (for example: platinum, nickel, copper, or nickel-iron) or other resistance inputs.

Petrochemical Processing
Used for precise temperature monitoring in distillation columns and storage tanks. The module supports high-accuracy RTD sensors to ensure process safety and product consistency in volatile environments.
Food and Beverage
Applied in pasteurization and commercial baking temperature control systems. It provides reliable monitoring for thermal processing to meet strict regulatory and quality standards for food safety.
Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
Implemented in cleanroom environmental controls and reactor vessel monitoring. The module’s high-resolution resistance measurement is critical for maintaining stable chemical reaction temperatures and sterile conditions.
Power Generation
Utilized for monitoring bearing and winding temperatures in large motors and generators. It helps prevent equipment overheating and unplanned downtime in utility-scale power plants.
HVAC Systems
Designed for building automation systems in large commercial complexes. It manages precise air handling and water temperature regulation to optimize energy efficiency and indoor climate control.
Water Treatment
Used to monitor water temperature in purification and cooling tower applications. The module facilitates accurate feedback for chemical dosing and thermal management in municipal and industrial water systems.
The module is designed for operation within a temperature range of 0°C to 60°C (32°F to 140°F). Adequate spacing and ventilation must be maintained within the SLC 500 enclosure to prevent heat buildup. Exposure to corrosive gases or excessive moisture (above 95% non-condensing) must be avoided to protect the internal circuitry and terminal block connections from degradation. Each of the four channels is individually fused or protected against overvoltage conditions within the specified limits; however, exceeding the 24V DC backplane power rating can lead to module failure.
What are the compatible input types for the Allen-Bradley 1746-NR4 module?
The 1746-NR4 supports four channels of RTD (Platinum, Nickel, Copper, or Nickel-Iron) or direct resistance inputs (0 to 150.000, 0 to 500.00, or 0 to 3000.0 ohms).
What is the backplane current consumption for the 1746-NR4 at 5V and 24V DC?
The module consumes a maximum of 50 mA at 5V DC and 50 mA at 24V DC from the SLC backplane power supply.
How should the RTD cable shields be grounded for the 1746-NR4 module?
RTD cable shields must be grounded at only one end, preferably at the chassis ground of the SLC 500 rack, to prevent ground loops.
What is the digital resolution of the 1746-NR4 when configured for different RTD types?
The module provides a resolution of 16-bit signed integer, with temperature units selectable in 0.1°C, 0.1°F, 1°C, or 1°F increments.
What are the environmental operating specifications for the 1746-NR4?
The module is designed to operate in temperatures from 0°C to 60°C (32°F to 140°F) and a relative humidity of 5% to 95% non-condensing.
