Overview Manuals Common Applications Product Precautions
The 1746-IB16 is a 16-point DC digital input module for the SLC 500 programmable controller platform. It accepts 10 to 30 VDC sinking input signals from field devices and converts them into digital input data for processing by the SLC 500 controller. The module provides sixteen independent input channels with one point per common, enabling acquisition of switch, sensor, and discrete control signals in industrial automation systems.
    • Wide range of replacement power supplies, chassis, communications modules, I/O cards and accessories available
    • EtherNet I/P Adapter (1747-AENTR) available to convert an existing system to distributed I/O
    • Flexible options for Analogue and Digital I/O cards to modify and expand system capabilities
The 1746-IB16 installs in a 1746 SLC chassis and communicates directly with the processor through the system backplane. The module incorporates optical isolation between the field wiring and the controller to reduce the effects of electrical noise while protecting the control system from field-side disturbances. LED status indicators are provided for each input channel, allowing operating conditions to be identified during commissioning, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance.

The removable terminal block allows field wiring and module replacement without changing existing wiring connections. As part of the Allen-Bradley SLC 500 I/O family, the 1746-IB16 interfaces DC input devices such as proximity sensors, limit switches, push buttons, photoelectric sensors, and auxiliary contacts with programmable control systems. It is applied in factory automation, packaging machinery, material handling equipment, water treatment facilities, manufacturing production lines, and process control systems, where digital signal acquisition is required for machine control and monitoring.

Automotive Manufacturing Industry
Collects discrete logic signals from cylinder stroke limit switches, robotic gripper proximity sensors, and safety light curtains on body welding and final assembly lines.

Packaging Machinery Industry
Collects film-in-place, label-out detection, and packaging box sorting fork stroke signals in fully automatic sealing and labeling machines.

Rubber and Plastics Machinery Industry
Collects the logical status of safety door interlock limit switches, mold-clamping-in-place proximity switches, and robotic arm safety home position sensors in injection molding and vulcanizing machines.

Metal Processing and Machine Tool Industry
Collects signals from workpiece hydraulic clamping in-place, tool magazine ready-to-change limits, and coolant low-level switches in large gantry milling machines and CNC punching presses.

Pharmaceutical Machinery Industry
Reads mold reset strokes, pill missing photoelectric detections, and rejection mechanism action confirmation switches in capsule filling and blister packaging machines.

Electronics and Semiconductor Packaging Auxiliary Equipment
Captures magazine-in-place microswitches, track blocking cylinder limits, and field emergency stop button statuses in PCB conveyors, loaders/unloaders, and wafer material cart sorting devices.
As a 24VDC sinking input module, the 1746-IB16 must be paired with PNP-type sensors (NPN is strictly prohibited). Since the SLC 500 system does not support hot-swapping, all installation or replacement must be performed under complete power-off conditions.

Technical notes

All 16 input channels of the 1746-IB16 are physically isolated from the low-voltage digital circuitry (5VDC) of the SLC 500 chassis backplane bus via high-performance optocouplers.

FAQS

  • Does the 1746-IB16 support source wiring configuration?
Yes. As a sinking module, it requires sourcing field devices (like PNP sensors) that supply +24VDC to the inputs.
  • How many input groups does the 1746-IB16 have?
It has one input group with 16 channels sharing a single common terminal.
  • Can I use the 1746-IB16 as a distributed I/O module?
Yes. It works as local I/O or as distributed remote I/O when paired with a network adapter like the 1747-AENTR.
