Overview Manuals Common Applications Maintenance Guidelines
The 1746-IO12 is a combination discrete I/O module designed for use with the Allen-Bradley SLC 500 family of controllers. This module features 6 inputs and 6 outputs in a single-slot configuration, providing a cost-effective solution for applications with low I/O density requirements by utilizing both AC/DC input and relay output capabilities on the same hardware.
    • Combination I/O Configuration
    • Individually Isolated Relays
    • 120V AC/DC Versatility
This module provides 120V AC/DC inputs and individually isolated relay contact outputs, ensuring high versatility for switching various load types. It features a removable terminal block for ease of wiring and 1500V AC optical isolation between the I/O terminals and backplane logic to maintain system integrity and protect the processor from electrical noise.

 Wastewater Treatment
Operates solenoid valves and chemical feed pumps in small-scale lift stations. The combination of 120V AC inputs and relay outputs allows for direct control of status sensors and motor starters on a single module.

 Building Automation
Manages HVAC dampers and lighting control circuits in commercial facilities. It provides individually isolated relay contacts to switch different voltage levels for fans and heaters while monitoring thermostat limit switches.

 Food Processing
Controls small conveyor segments and packaging sorters in wash-down environments. The 1500V optical isolation protects the backplane logic from electrical noise generated by inductive loads and frequent switching cycles.

 Material Handling
Regulates palletizers and localized pick-and-place stations with low I/O density. The removable terminal block facilitates quick maintenance and wiring of limit switches and pneumatic directional control valves.

 Chemical Industry
Drives metering pumps and monitors tank level float switches in hazardous area secondary containment. It utilizes 120V AC/DC input versatility to interface with various field devices and provides robust dry-contact relay outputs.

 Manufacturing Assembly
Coordinates pneumatic clamps and safety interlocking gates on manual assembly benches. The single-slot design saves rack space while providing 6 inputs and 6 outputs for localized machine control functions.
The 1746-IO12 must be installed into any available slot of an SLC 500 chassis, ensuring the module is fully seated and the door latches are secured to maintain backplane communication. Before wiring, the removable terminal block should be unplugged to allow for easier terminal access and to prevent accidental shorting of the 120V AC/DC input or relay output circuits. All power to the SLC chassis and external field power sources must be disconnected before installing or removing the module to prevent equipment damage or personal injury from electrical shock.

Proper cable routing is required to separate high-voltage AC lines from low-voltage communication cables, and the status of the input and output LEDs should be monitored during operation to verify correct I/O signal transitions. Regular maintenance includes inspecting the relay contact life based on switching frequency and load current, and ensuring the ambient operating temperature does not exceed 60°C (140°F) to prevent thermal degradation of the internal components.
