The 1746-HS is a single-channel, high-speed counter module designed for use with the Allen-Bradley SLC 500 family of programmable controllers. This intelligent I/O module resides in the SLC 500 chassis and provides high-speed counting independent of the processor scan time, interfacing directly with incremental encoders or high-speed pulse sources.
50 kHz Counting Frequency
Onboard Isolated Output
Selectable Input Voltages
This module provides a counting frequency up to 50 kHz and supports various counting modes, including Up/Down, Pulse/Direction, and Quadrature (X1 or X4) operation. It features an onboard 5/12/24V DC isolated output that can be controlled by the module based on a count comparison, ensuring high-speed response for precise machine control and positioning.

Material Handling
Controls high-speed conveyors for precise sorting. It interfaces with encoders to monitor belt displacement independent of the processor scan.
Food and Beverage
Manages automated bottling lines for liquid filling. It supports quadrature operation to ensure accurate volumetric flow and container synchronization.
Steel Processing
Monitors cut-to-length applications in rolling mills. It processes high-frequency signals up to 50 kHz for high-speed shear operations.
Packaging Machinery
Regulates vertical form-fill-seal and labeling equipment. Internal DIP switches allow 5V or 12/24V DC connection to various industrial sensors.
Textile Manufacturing
Operates precision winding requiring constant thread tension. The 16-bit counting range provides high-resolution feedback for multi-axis motion.
Automotive Assembly
Tracks robotic arm positioning and rotary indexing. It provides 1500V optical isolation to protect the system from electrical noise.
The 1746-HS module must be installed in any available slot of an SLC 500 chassis, except for slot 0 which is reserved for the processor. Before installation, internal DIP switches located on the side of the module must be configured to match the input voltage requirements of 5V DC or 12/24V DC for Phase A, B, and Z. All power to the chassis must be removed before inserting or removing the module to prevent damage to the backplane circuitry or the module's 16-bit counter logic.
Regular maintenance involves verifying that terminal connections remain tight and that the ambient operating temperature remains within the specified range of 0°C to 60°C (32°F to 140°F) to ensure reliable high-speed pulse processing.
What is the maximum input frequency supported by the 1746-HS High-Speed Counter module?
The 1746-HS module is designed to interface with high-speed pulse signals and provides a maximum counting frequency of 50,000 pulses per second (50 kHz).
How is the input voltage level selected for the 1746-HS module hardware?
The input voltage range is selected using internal DIP switches located on the side of the module, supporting 5V DC or 12/24V DC configurations for Phase A, B, and Z.
What types of counting modes can be programmed for the 1746-HS?
The module supports various modes including Up/Down counting, Pulse/Direction, and Quadrature (X1 or X4) for bidirectional position sensing.
What is the backplane current draw for the 1746-HS from the SLC 500 chassis?
The 1746-HS has a backplane current consumption of 300 mA at 5V DC and 0 mA at 24V DC from the SLC power supply.
Does the 1746-HS provide an onboard output for direct hardware control?
Yes, it features one high-speed isolated output rated for 5, 12, or 24V DC that can be triggered when the count reaches a pre-programmed value.
