The 1746-NI8 is an 8-channel analog input module for the SLC 500 series programmable logic controller (PLC) platform. It directly acquires continuous voltage or current signals from field transmitters and sensors, converting them into digital values for PLC processing.

The 1746-NI8 module receives its power through the SLC 500 chassis backplane from the fixed or modular +5V dc/+24V dc chassis power supply. The +5V dc backplane supply powers the SLC circuitry, and the +24V dc backplane supply powers the module analog circuitry. The 1746-NI8 analog input module has multiclass interface capabilities. Class 1 is the standard configuration. The module can be configured through the user program for Class 3 which enables user-defined data scaling and monitoring of channel status words. The 1746-NI8 analog input module is tested to meet Council Directive 89/336/EEC Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC).

First, configure DIP switches correctly—you must set the internal hardware switches for voltage or current before insertion, as incorrect settings cause data errors or resistor damage.
Second, prevent single-ended common-ground loops—all 8 channels share an internal analog common, so tie unused channels to COM and use signal isolators for multi-location devices to avoid potential differences.
Third, no hot-swapping—turn off chassis power completely before removing or installing the module.
The 1746-NI8 analog input module utilizes a high-precision analog-to-digital converter, providing a resolution up to 16-bit. In 4-20mA or 1-5V mode, the input digital value maps to a range of 3,277 to 16,384 (standard scaling) or 0 to 16,384 (variable scaling), allowing it to capture subtle signal changes.
The 1746-NI8 has a total of eight analog input channels.
