Overview Manuals Common Applications Product Precautions
The 1756-L71 is a programmable automation controller for various industrial control scenarios. This controller supports up to 32 controller tasks and offers high-compatibility communication capabilities, supporting multiple network protocols to integrate into different network environments.
    • Offer flexible user memory options
    • Communicates via EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Data Highway Plus, Remote I/O, SynchLink, and third-party process and device networks
    • Includes conformal coating on products that include a "K" in the catalogue number, to help protect in harsh environments
The controller includes 2 megabytes of onboard user memory for application code and data tag storage, alongside a secure digital card slot that provides nonvolatile storage for project backups and firmware replication. Capable of managing up to 32 concurrent scheduling tasks—including continuous, periodic, and event tasks—this processing unit ensures precise synchronization between high-point-count local and distributed I/O systems across heavy industrial networks.

Built to ensure continuous facility runtime and minimize maintenance overhead, the 1756-L71 utilizes a battery-free energy storage module to protect volatile data. During an unexpected power interruption, the ESM provides sufficient internal electricity to automatically flush the controller’s active memory into nonvolatile storage, eliminating the need for periodic lithium battery replacements.

The front panel incorporates a USB 2.0 communication port, allowing technicians to perform high-speed local programming, online project edits, firmware flashing, and real-time diagnostic downloading. Operating within standard 1756 ControlLogix chassis configurations, the controller communicates over the high-speed ControlBus backplane with motion modules, analog I/O, and advanced networking interfaces such as EtherNet/IP and ControlNet. This processor is deployed in demanding applications including raw material processing, multi-axis servo motion control, high-speed sorting, and fully redundant factory automation systems.

Automotive Manufacturing
Serves as the main controller to precisely coordinate the synchronized motion and safety interlocking of dozens of industrial robots on stamping, body welding, and final assembly lines.

Thermal & Power Generation
Used in Balance of Plant (BOP) control systems, such as boiler makeup water, ash handling, and desulfurization, utilizing its multi-tasking architecture to ensure high data throughput and safety interlock logic.

Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology
Operates in FDA-compliant bioreactors and sterilization equipment, controlling high-precision fermentation batches and interfacing with upper databases via Ethernet modules for audit trail data syncing.

Steel & Metallurgical Industry
Applied in blast furnace batching, reheating furnaces, and high-precision rolling mill speed synchronization control, utilizing millisecond-level high-speed latching I/O to ensure steel thickness and quality.

Pulp & Paper Industry
Controls tension segments and main drive motor speeds of high-speed paper machines, executing complex liquid pulp ratio control to prevent web breaks and improve production efficiency.

Semiconductor & Electronics Assembly
Centrally processes material tracking data, safety airlock control, and rapid equipment-to-equipment interlocking in fully automated large-scale cleanroom Overhead Hoist Transport (OHT) systems and massive test bay facilities.
When using the Allen-Bradley 1756-L71 controller, ensure the system firmware matches the programming software version, and manage its 2 MB memory within safe limits to prevent program faults. Verify that the chassis power supply accommodates the controller's current draw, use the built-in USB port exclusively for temporary configuration or diagnostic purposes, and strictly follow the recommended environment specifications to maintain proper ventilation inside the cabinet.

FAQS

  • What is 1756-L71?
The Allen-Bradley 1756-L71 is a 1-slot, high-performance ControlLogix standard programmable automation controller (PAC) manufactured by Rockwell Automation.
  • What kind of enclosure does the 1756-L71 require?
The 1756-L71 does not require an enclosure.
  • Do the 1756-L71 Controllers use battery to retain program?
Instead of batteries, the Logix 5570 family (including 1756-L71) uses Energy Storage Modules (ESM). The ESM allows this unit to save the program to the onboard nonvolatile storage (NVS) memory of the controller even after power is turned off to the rack or the controller is taken out of a powered on rack.
  • Does the 1756-L71 provided with embedded Ethernet I/P port?
No. It only has 1 USB port, however, Ethernet port may be added via optional communication adapters.
  • What is the SD slot for on the 1756-L71?
The memory card enables the user to keep a copy of the project on the controller without the need to maintain power to the controller. The memory card can be used to store the contents of the user memory when project is stored.
