The 1791-32AO is a self-contained remote discrete input block module within the 1791 Block I/O series. This hardware includes 32 discrete input points rated at 120V AC (divided into 4 groups of 8 channels), one Remote I/O (RIO) communication interface, removable terminal strips, and LED status indicators.
The 64- and 128-point dc blocks can be vertically mounted in a panel
Small size allows blocks to be installed in a protected area of a machine or process
Self-contained package provides cost-effective distribution of as few as 16 discrete I/O points to a remote location
The 1791 Block I/O modules are fully compatible with PLC-2, PLC-3, and PLC-5 family programmable controllers, as well as the SLC family processors. However, when interfacing with PLC-3 programmable controllers, a 1775-S5 or -SR5 scanner module must be used; do not use 1775-SR, -S4A, or -S4B scanner modules.
When deploying within SLC family systems, a 1747-SN scanner module is required. For reference across the 1791 product family, some complementary AC output modules utilize zero-crossing technology to allow output turn-on when the voltage is below a specified level (typically 40-50V), which reduces stress on current-sensitive devices. When those output modules are paired with a load incorporating a single series diode, a shunt resistor should be placed across the load to ensure proper turn-on.

Automotive Manufacturing
Used for monitoring the running status of long-distance conveyors in body shops or final assembly lines.
Iron and Steel / Metallurgy Industry
Used for remote monitoring of blast furnace material charging systems and high-heat environment conveying equipment.
Water and Wastewater Treatment
Employed for distributed remote data acquisition in pump stations, sedimentation tanks, and valve pits to handle humid and long-distance environments.
Thermal Power and Energy Industry
Utilized in remote control networks for coal handling systems, ash removal systems, and boiler auxiliary peripheral equipment.
Chemical and Petrochemical Industry
Deployed for remote high-voltage signal interlocking in non-core explosion-proof zones (such as finished product packaging and raw material tank farm utilities).
Pulp and Paper Industry
Implemented in long-distance material handling control across pulp preparation areas, large paper winders, and slitter peripherals.
This is a 120V AC digital input module. Connecting DC power or driving loads directly will damage the channels or cause safety hazards. As an integrated Block I/O, it does not support Hot-Swapping (RIUP). Complete system power shutdown is required before wiring or module replacement.
The 1791-32A0 functions as a data acquisition unit in distributed I/O systems, connecting to the upper control link via the RIO protocol, and is compatible with PLC-2, PLC-3, and PLC-5 series controllers, as well as SLC series processors.
The 1791-32A0 supports the RIO communication protocol.
Does the 1771-32A0 require an external power to operate?
Yes. It requires a nominal 120VAC external power supply with a current consumption of 150 mA.
Does the module come with discrete output channels?
No. The 1791-32A0 is a dedicated discrete input module and has no output channels.
