Bently Nevada 3300 XL Replacement Guide

Matching Probes, Extension Cables and Proximitor Sensors

A replacement is complete only when the installed mechanical fit, electrical system length, component family and commissioning result all agree.

First decision
Identify the failed component
Matching rule
Preserve the engineered system
Release basis
Verify the complete loop

A Bently Nevada 3300 XL 8 mm proximity transducer system is an engineered measurement chain: a probe observes the conductive target, an extension cable completes the specified electrical length when required, and a Proximitor Sensor converts the eddy-current response into a voltage signal for the monitoring channel.

The three parts are designed for interchangeability within the qualified 3300 XL 8 mm family, but that does not make every part number a valid replacement for every installation. A disciplined replacement preserves the family, electrical system length, target calibration, temperature class, connector arrangement, mounting geometry, approvals and installed monitoring function.

1. Start with the Failure Boundary

Do not begin by ordering the first readable model number. First decide whether the fault is in the probe, the probe-to-extension connection, the extension cable, the Proximitor Sensor, the field wiring, the monitor channel or the mechanical installation.

Observed condition Checks before replacement Why the boundary matters
Unstable or noisy signal Connector condition, shield and ground practice, cable routing, probe security, target surface and channel input Noise can originate outside the probe; replacing only the sensing tip may leave the real defect untouched.
Gap voltage out of range Mechanical gap, target material, probe mounting, total system length, supply and Proximitor output A length or target mismatch can shift the transfer curve even when every connector mates physically.
Intermittent signal Integral lead, extension cable, ClickLoc connection, connector protector, contamination and movement at bends The removable cable or connector may be the serviceable fault, preserving an installed probe that is difficult to access.
No monitor indication Proximitor supply, common, output wiring, barriers, terminals, monitor configuration and channel condition A healthy transducer loop cannot correct missing power, open field wiring or a disabled monitoring channel.

Maintenance rule: preserve the as-found reading, complete part numbers, wiring state, gap, channel configuration and visible condition before disconnecting any component.

2. Treat the Three Components as One Measurement Chain

3300 XL 8 mm signal path
Conductive target → 3300 XL 8 mm probe → extension cable → 3300 XL Proximitor Sensor → monitor channel

Each component has a different job and a different ordering-code structure. The probe code describes items such as mounting thread, case geometry, total probe length, cable construction and approval option. The extension-cable code identifies cable length and construction. The Proximitor Sensor code identifies calibrated system length, mounting arrangement and approval option.

1 Probe: preserve the exact family, thread, armor status, case and unthreaded lengths, total lead length, connector/cable option and approval suffix.
2 Extension cable: preserve length, standard or extended-temperature family, armor, FluidLoc and connector-protector requirements.
3 Proximitor Sensor: preserve calibrated system length, panel/DIN/no-hardware mounting choice, approval option, power and output wiring.

The base numbers matter. A suffix value on a probe does not necessarily mean the same thing on a 330130 extension cable. Decode every full part number against the ordering table for that component family.

3. Lock the Electrical System Length

For a system using an extension cable, the probe total length and extension-cable length must add up to the Proximitor Sensor's calibrated total system length. This is an electrical matching rule, not an estimate of the physical route through the machine or conduit.

Probe total length + extension-cable length = Proximitor Sensor system length
Candidate chain Arithmetic result Decision
1.0 m probe + 4.0 m extension cable 5.0 m Length can match a 5.0 m Proximitor Sensor; continue with all non-length checks.
1.0 m probe + 8.0 m extension cable 9.0 m Length can match a 9.0 m Proximitor Sensor; continue with all non-length checks.
0.5 m probe + 8.5 m extension cable 9.0 m Length can match a 9.0 m Proximitor Sensor; geometry and cable options still require review.
1.0 m probe + 8.5 m extension cable 9.5 m Reject against the standard 1.0, 5.0 and 9.0 m 3300 XL 8 mm Proximitor Sensor options.

For a detailed walk-through of probe and 330130 cable length codes, see Apter Power's 330130 cable-length matching guide. This replacement guide continues from that calculation into the mechanical, environmental and commissioning decisions.

4. Pass the Non-Length Matching Gates

A correct sum is only the first gate. Before releasing a replacement, compare every item below with the installed drawing, complete labels and current project requirements.

Matching gate What to compare Failure avoided
Transducer family 3300 XL 8 mm identity across probe, cable and Proximitor Sensor; any documented compatibility provision A mechanically connected but electrically unqualified mixed system
Probe mounting 3/8-24 UNF, M10 x 1, reverse mount or smooth case; case length, unthreaded length and clearance Insufficient thread engagement, wrong reach or inability to set the operating gap
Cable construction Standard or ETR cable, armor, FluidLoc, connector protector, route and bend control Mechanical damage, liquid migration, temperature exposure or inaccessible connection hardware
Target calibration Target material and geometry; standard calibration is based on AISI 4140 steel Scale-factor and linearity error caused by an unreviewed target material
Sensor mounting Panel mount, DIN mount or no mounting hardware; isolation, enclosure and terminal access A correct sensor that cannot be mounted or isolated in the installed enclosure
Approval basis Complete approval suffix, area classification, barriers, wiring practice and installation conditions Treating one suffix as complete hazardous-area acceptance

5. Build a Replacement Worksheet Before the RFQ

A useful worksheet lets maintenance, engineering, procurement and the supplier review the same installed chain. Record values rather than relying on phrases such as “standard probe,” “nine-metre cable” or “same as before.” For commercial planning, review Apter Power's industrial automation services.

Record group Minimum information Evidence to attach
Probe Full part number, thread or case style, geometry, total length, armor, connector/cable option and approval suffix Label, tip, case, cable and installed-mount photos
Extension cable Full part number, length, standard/ETR family, armor, FluidLoc, protector and approval suffix Label plus both connector ends and route condition
Proximitor Sensor Full part number, calibrated system length, mounting option, approval code, supply and terminal wiring Front/side label, mounting and terminal photos
Measurement point Machine tag, radial/axial/Keyphasor/speed function, target material, normal gap and monitor channel Loop drawing, machine drawing and channel record
Procurement scope Quantity, preferred condition, included accessories, documentation, required delivery date and destination Purchase specification and receiving checklist

6. Separate Supplier Checks from Site Acceptance

Supplier evidence confirms the offered component. Site acceptance confirms the installed measurement loop. Both are necessary, and neither substitutes for the other. Review Apter Power's part-condition definitions and warranty policy alongside the quotation.

1 Confirm the offered identity. Compare the complete part number, label, revision or option marking, condition and included hardware with the RFQ.
2 Inspect the physical interface. Check the probe tip, threads, cable jacket or armor, ClickLoc connectors, protector hardware, sensor mounting and terminals.
3 Recalculate system length. Record probe length, extension-cable length and Proximitor Sensor length as three separate values.
4 Control installation. Follow the applicable isolation, connector handling, cable routing, grounding, mounting and gapping procedure.
5 Verify the complete loop. Check supply, static gap voltage, signal polarity, monitor scaling, channel indication and any approved dynamic or functional test.
6 Close the record. Document as-left part numbers, readings, cable route, test result, exceptions and authorization for return to service.

Acceptance boundary: a component that powers up or passes a limited bench test is not yet proof that the installed probe-cable-Proximitor loop has the correct transfer behavior and monitoring-channel response.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I replace only one component in a Bently Nevada 3300 XL 8 mm system?
Yes, qualified 3300 XL 8 mm components are designed for interchangeability without individual bench matching. The replacement must still preserve the documented system family, calibrated system length, target basis, component options and installation conditions.
Is matching the total length enough to approve a replacement?
No. Length arithmetic is necessary, but the probe mounting geometry, cable construction, temperature family, target material, Proximitor mounting, approval option, field wiring and monitoring function must also be checked.
Can an 8.0 m 330130 cable be used in a 5.0 m system?
Not as a standard probe-plus-extension arrangement. The probe and extension cable must add up to the selected Proximitor Sensor system length. An 8.0 m extension cable normally forms a 9.0 m arithmetic combination with a 1.0 m probe, subject to all remaining checks.
Does a ClickLoc connector prove that two components are compatible?
No. Connector fit is only a physical observation. Confirm the complete probe, extension-cable and Proximitor Sensor identities and the applicable system documentation.
What should be checked when changing from an unarmored to an armored probe or cable?
Review the complete ordering code, route, available clearance, bend control, ferrule dimensions, connector access, grounding practice and whether the installed design actually requires armor. A more heavily protected option is not automatically a drop-in mechanical replacement.
Why does target material matter after the correct components are selected?
The standard transfer behavior is calibrated to an AISI 4140 steel target. A different conductive target can change scale factor and linearity, so the target basis must be reviewed before commissioning.
What information should be sent for a 3300 XL replacement quotation?
Send the complete probe, extension-cable and Proximitor Sensor part numbers; clear label and connector photos; the measured length chain; mounting and cable options; target material; area classification; quantity; preferred condition; destination and required delivery date.
What proves the replacement loop is ready for service?
Use the approved site procedure to verify complete identities, mounting and cable routing, system-length record, supply, static gap voltage, signal polarity, monitor scaling, channel response and any required functional test. Record the as-left result and authorization for return to service.
