Product Describe:
Flex 8 Point Thermocouple RTD Module
Thermocouple/RTD/Mv, Non-Isolated, Input Module
Interface analog signals with any programmable
controller have block transfer capability
The 1794-IRT8 scales the flexibility of the FLEX I/O family by housing both RTD and Thermocouple measurement technologies on a single 8-channel footprint (split into two groups of four). This 14-bit resolution module natively accommodates micro-voltage windows, processing a nominal -40…100 mV DC range for thermocouple field signals alongside a 0…325 mV range for RTD devices to maintain robust signal integrity across distributed loops.
Isolated inputs or outputs, protected outputs, electronic fusing, or diagnostics available on some modules
Removal and Insertion Under Power (RIUP) lets you replace modules and make cable connections while the system is in operation
Each I/O module requires a terminal base for connection points for I/O wiring
The 1794-IRT8 is installed on a standard FLEX terminal base, incorporating a highly sensitive millivolt amplifier and a 14-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to ensure signal resolution. The module delivers a nominal input span of -40…100 mV DC for thermocouple elements and 0-325 mV for RTD configurations. This precise capability allows 1794-IRT8 to interface weak analog signals directly with any programmable controller possessing block transfer capability. Whether utilizing legacy Block Transfer Read/Write (BTR/BTW) algorithms or mapped over modern EtherNet/IP implicit messaging profiles, the module ensures swift and deterministic data synchronization with the host CPU.
The 1794-IRT8 features high durablity and fully supports Removal and Insertion Under Power (RIUP). This allows the upper electronic housing to be hot-swapped under live backplane conditions without disconnecting a single field wire or interrupting the neighboring I/O topology, reducing Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) and maximizing continuous system uptime.

Petroleum Refining & Fine Chemicals
Used in temperature cluster control for fractionation columns, hydrogenation reactors, and cracking furnaces. It mixes Types B/S/K high-pressure thermocouples and Pt100 RTDs, utilizing 14-bit resolution to precisely capture micro-exothermic chemical reactions and prevent thermal runaway.
Thermal Power Generation & Cogeneration
Applied in temperature monitoring for boiler superheaters, reheaters, and flue gas exhausts. It terminates large arrays of high-temperature thermocouples, leveraging block transfer capability for high-speed, synchronized data transmission back to the host CPU.
Steel Smelting & Metal Heat Treatment
Deployed in blast furnace lining erosion monitoring, ladle annealing furnaces, and multi-zone heating furnaces. It interfaces with premium high-temperature noble metal thermocouples (e.g., Types R/S) to reliably quantify temperature distribution inside linings under strong EMI environments.
Pharmaceutical & Bio-Fermentation Reactors
Applied in process control for stainless steel fermenters, sterile batching tanks, and sterilization-in-place (SIP) autoclaves. It supports 4-wire RTD configurations to eliminate lead-wire resistance errors, meeting strict high-accuracy GMP validation mandates.
Semiconductor Wafer Diffusion & Epitaxy
Deployed in extremely precise temperature control for diffusion furnace bodies and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) tools. Utilizing 14-bit ADC resolution, it senses subtle thermal fluctuations down to 0.1°C, assisting host PID loops to ensure wafer thin-film uniformity.
When using the 1794-IRT8 temperature module, note that its channels are non-isolated. Field thermocouple and RTD shields must be properly grounded at a single point, and cables must be isolated from high-power lines to prevent noise-induced data spikes.
The module features a hybrid architecture of 2 groups x 4 channels; for RTD wiring, channels within the same group must uniformly use the same configuration (2-wire, 3-wire, or 4-wire) and cannot be mixed. When terminating thermocouples, ensure the Cold-Junction Compensation (CJC) thermistors are correctly installed on the base for precise measurement.
Lastly, while it supports hot-swapping (RIUP), always apply smooth and perfectly vertical force—never tilt—to protect the mating pins inside the terminal base.
1794-IRT8 is a FLEX I/O universal temperature input module that accommodates millivolt, thermocouple, and RTD signals. In its Series B hardware release, this module supports direct connection to grounded thermocouples without triggering channel-to-channel interference or fault conditions.
The 1794-IRT8 is a high-accuracy temperature input module.
How do you use the 1794-IRT8 module in an industrial automation system?
First, plug the 1794-IRT8 vertically into a compatible terminal base (such as the 1794-TB3). Next, connect the field RTD or thermocouple cables to the base terminals. Finally, configure the channel parameters in the PLC software (such as Studio 5000) to convert temperature signals into digital values for the PLC master.
How many input channels does the 1794-IRT8 module have?
The 1794-IRT8 is configured with a total of 8 input channels. These 8 channels are divided into 2 independent groups of 4 channels each, a structure that helps optimize galvanic and electrical performance between groups.
What is the nominal input voltage range of the 1794-IRT8 when processing thermocouple signals?
When the 1794-IRT8 is utilized to process thermocouple sensors, its nominal input voltage range is -40 to +100 mV DC, which is explicitly specified to capture the faint millivolt-level DC voltage variations produced by thermocouples.
What is the data conversion resolution of the 1794-IRT8 module?
The 1794-IRT8 possesses a 14-bit analog-to-digital conversion resolution. This means it can resolve subtle analog temperature electrical signals into 16,384 digital steps, ensuring extremely high temperature measurement sensitivity.
