Overview Manuals Common Applications Product Precautions
The T7481 is a Monitored Guarded Digital Output Module within Rockwell Automation's ICS Triplex series. It provides low-density I/O interfacing for Regent and Regent+Plus subsystems integrated within Trusted safety systems. Built for hazardous operational conditions requiring high safety integrity levels, this module is widely deployed globally across Emergency Shutdown (ESD) systems and Burner Management Systems (BMS) within large-scale chemical plants, oil refineries, and power generation facilities.
    • Supports 1oo1D deployment of a single module
    • Remove the faulty module and replace it with a new one
    • Equipped with 16 highly reliable digital output channels
When integrated into the system, the module receives output commands over the I/O Safetybus. To achieve a high safety integrity level and prevent spurious or dangerous failures, internal logic gates monitor the dynamic transition of each output. The module utilizes internal series-connected output control switches driven by independent signals. Current flows to energize the field load only when all series switches are closed; if any internal fault or safety trip occurs, the switches open to guarantee a fail-safe de-energized state.

Petrochemical Refining
Controls critical emergency isolation valves and interlock systems to immediately shut down process flows during feed hydrocarbon leaks, managing safe failure states under high-risk environments.

Thermal Power
Manages the automated safety sequence of coal and gas burners, controlling main fuel trip (MFT) relays to completely extinguish the furnace fire upon detecting critical ventilation or pressure faults.

Coal Chemical Gasification
Interlocks the emergency high-pressure oxygen shut-off valves of the gasifier block, isolating potential explosion risks through its series-connected hardware switch topology.

Iron & Steel Metallurgy
Operates the emergency bleed-off valves of blast furnace tops, completely filtering out ambient heavy electromagnetic motor noise through its onboard FPGA logic isolation layers.

Natural Gas Pipeline Systems
De-energizes long-distance pipeline sectioning valves during terminal or downstream blockage overpressure, running without power derating inside remote instrument enclosures at high altitudes up to 2000 meters.
When maintaining and operating the T7481 module, technicians must strictly adhere to the timing regulations of the Safe Failure Operating Cycle (SFOC). The system must periodically trigger microsecond-level dynamic state transitions on the output channels during routine operations to completely eliminate latent faults that could cause terminal deadlock.

When online diagnostics capture internal circuitry anomalies or channel electrical faults, the replacement of the spare part must be completed within the prescribed Second Fault Occurrence Period.

Although the module supports online hot-swapping, technicians must confirm that system redundancy is correctly configured and paired with the corresponding Field Termination Assembly (FTA) before performing any insertion or removal. Additionally, ensure the operational environment for high-altitude sites does not exceed 2000 meters to prevent power derating caused by crossing the specified threshold.

Technical notes

Technical notes

The T7481 is the core hardware card responsible for terminal isolation and on-off control within the ICS Triplex Regent+Plus safety control architecture [INDEX]. During emergency shutdowns (ESD) or burner management (BMS) in large-scale plants, this hardware directly receives triplicated write data commands from the upper central processor [INDEX]. Onboard the card are two independent voters and dual Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chips which respectively drive two control switches kept in a physical series connection with field loads such as solenoid valves and relays [INDEX]. Under this series topology, current flows through the output to power the field actuator only when both internal switches are simultaneously closed and conducting. If either switch opens due to an anomaly, the entire circuit is cut off immediately and forces the field load into a de-energized state. Through this interlocking mechanism, a single hardware failure can only affect one of the drive signals, thereby fundamentally blocking the risk of valve maloperation or failure to trip caused by individual component faults.

FAQS

  • What is the T7481?
The T7481 is an industrial safety controller hardware component.
  • How does the T7481 module accept and vote safety command data?
The T7481 receives triplicated write data commands from processor modules and routes them to two independent onboard voters to drive Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA).
  • How does the T7481 ensure fail-safe activation of a field load?
The T7481 uses two independent control switches connected in series with the load. Current flows only when both switches are on; if either switch turns off, the load de-energizes.
  • How many output channels does a single T7481 module provide?
A single T7481 module provides 16 highly reliable monitored output channels.
  • What is the Safe Failure Operating Cycle (SFOC) requirement for the T7481?
The T7481 requires output channels to undergo dynamic state transitions within a prescribed Safe Failure Operating Cycle (SFOC) to prevent latent internal faults from freezing the terminal.
