Overview Manuals Common Applications Product Precautions
The IS215VPROH2BC is a high-reliability turbine protection board from General Electric for the Mark VI Speedtronic control system. Operating within a dedicated module separate from the main turbine control, it functions as the heart of the Turbine Protection System alongside its designated TPRO and TREG terminal boards. By utilizing a Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) setup with three independent VPRO boards, this configuration delivers a completely autonomous, robust, and fail-safe emergency overspeed protection mechanism to guarantee maximum operational safety.
    • Ethernet Connection for IONet Communications
    • Independent Emergency Trip Function
    • Trip Solenoid Connection / Relay Control on TREG
This board runs the emergency overspeed protection and Emergency Shutdown (ESD) sequences, triggering electrical and mechanical isolation during abnormal conditions. For fault tolerance, the board connects to TREG and TRPG terminal boards to operate the trip solenoid system. The TREG board supplies the positive side of the 125VDC power to a maximum of three trip solenoids, while the TRPG board provides the negative side. This dual-sided power control uses twelve onboard relays. Nine of these relays are grouped into three sets to run a two-out-of-three (2oo3) hardware voting logic. For data connection, the board includes a built-in Ethernet port for IONet communications with the main control modules, supporting continuous data transfer and status diagnostics while keeping the physical protection loop independent.

Thermal Power Generation
Used in steam turbine control for coal-fired or gas-fired power plants to trigger Emergency Shutdown (ESD) and close main steam valves during high bearing vibration or low vacuum conditions.

Oil and Gas Extraction
Installed in heavy-duty gas turbines on offshore platforms or onshore gas fields to monitor overspeed and prevent mechanical damage to natural gas compressor drivers.

Petrochemical Processing
Protects industrial steam turbines driving large charge gas compressors in ethylene or ammonia plants, executing safety trips via 2oo3 relay logic during process upsets.

Metallurgical and Steel Industry
Runs protection sequences for Top Pressure Recovery Turbine (TRT) systems in ironmaking blast furnaces to isolate power during extreme gas flow or pressure anomalies.

Biomass Power Generation
Provides out-of-limit protection for steam turbines in biomass direct-fired or gasification plants, stopping the unit when steam temperature, pressure, or speed exceeds safety limits.

Nuclear Power
Applied to turbine-generator units in the non-nuclear (conventional island) section of nuclear power plants, providing high-reliability overspeed trip protection via TMR configuration.
Never hot-swap the IS215VPROH2BC and wear an anti-static wrist strap during handling. Accurately verify the 125VDC polarities when wiring TREG and TRPG. After a board replacement in a TMR system you must download the configuration and verify the 2oo3 voting logic. Finally check the IONet communication status via the Ethernet port after power-up to ensure zero fault codes.

Technical notes

Technical notes

The GE IS215VPROH2BC is a turbine emergency protection control board specifically designed for the Mark VI Speedtronic system. As a core protection component, it features a highly reliable Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) architecture and operates independently of the main control system. The board provides overspeed protection, Emergency Shutdown (ESD), synchronization detection, and comprehensive diagnostics, ensuring the absolute safety of fuel or steam turbine units under extreme abnormal conditions by rapidly and accurately tripping fuel valves or cutting off power sources.

FAQS

  • What is the GE IS215VPROH2BC?
It is an emergency overspeed protection board (Turbine Protection Board) for the GE Mark VI control system, functioning as a core hardware component within the VPRO protection core.
  • What is the primary function of the IS215VPROH2BC?
It is dedicated to independently monitoring turbine speed conditions (such as gas or steam turbines) and directly executing trip solenoid drive commands upon detecting emergency overspeed or trip signals that endanger unit safety.
  • Where is the IS215VPROH2BC module typically installed within the control system?
It utilizes a standard plug-in card structure, typically inserted vertically inside the VPRO Protection Rack within the Mark VI control cabinet.
  • How does the IS215VPROH2BC implement Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) protection?
The IS215VPROH2BC implements TMR protection by using three independent channels to process identical turbine data and execute a physical two-out-of-three voting logic via a 125VDC relay matrix on the TREG board.
  • How do you properly install or replace the IS215VPROH2BC card?
Under a completely powered-off state, align the card with the rack guides, slide it in until the high-density backplane connectors seat completely, and then secure the top and bottom captive screws on the front panel.
