Information

Overview Manuals Common Applications Product Precautions
Foxboro P0972VA enables an existing Nodebus installation to expand with FCP270 or ZCP270 control stations while retaining communication with its earlier stations.
  • Supports single-module or redundant primary/backup arrangements.
  • Provides LAN Interface and Nodebus extender operating modes.
  • Assigns soft letterbugs through an infrared configurator.
  • Displays module state, Nodebus activity and Ethernet A/B link activity.

A Mesh-connected workstation hosts the ATS. Compound and block parameter data can cross the bridge through interprocess communication, but a Mesh workstation cannot boot-host Nodebus stations through it.

Important Notice: Check whether a LAN Interface is already present on the node before selecting the ATS operating mode.

Foxboro P0972VA Manufacturer Technical Reference — Selected Pages (PDF)Foxboro P0972VA Installation & Commissioning Guide (PDF)

Use the technical reference for bridge modes, cable limits and station capacity. The installation guide follows network surveying, letterbug assignment and redundant-role testing.

Nodebus system expansion
Add Mesh control stations while maintaining communication with existing Nodebus stations.
Carrierband migration
Replace LAN Interface backbone connections with the Mesh network in a planned migration.
Redundant network bridge
Use a primary/backup ATS pair where automatic role transfer is required.
Mixed network data exchange
Exchange compound and block parameter data between Nodebus and Mesh stations.
Retain the node hosting and network-route arrangements when installing Foxboro P0972VA.
1
Identify the existing LI on the node and retain the selected bridge mode.
2
Reserve adjacent mounting slots and fit the P0926DF connector for a redundant pair.
3
Confirm the Mesh workstation assigned to host the ATS is available.
4
Keep Ethernet A and B routes identified independently throughout cable work.
5
Check optical connector cleanliness and the complete switch-to-ATS path length.
6
Retain Nodebus boot-host arrangements independently of Mesh data forwarding.
7
Verify the soft letterbug and hardware ID with the infrared configurator.
8
Test primary/backup role transfer and restore both network paths before release.

Technical notes

Redundant ATS modules occupy adjacent slots in a 1x8 or 2x8 mounting structure and use the P0926DF connector. Keep the local interlink connected so the pair can exchange health and state information.

FAQ View All FAQ

  • When does P0972VA operate as a LAN Interface instead of a Nodebus extender?
The ATS operates in LAN Interface mode when no LI is present on the same node. When an LI is present, it operates as a Nodebus extender.
  • Can a Mesh workstation boot Nodebus stations through P0972VA?
No. The bridge supports interprocess communication for compound and block parameter data, but boot hosting Nodebus stations from Mesh workstations is not supported.
  • How does the backup P0972VA detect that it should take over?
The two modules exchange health and state information through the network and a local interlink. If the backup no longer receives the periodic healthy indication from the primary, it assumes primary responsibilities automatically.
  • How far can the optical connection between P0972VA and its Ethernet switch extend?
The total optical path may reach 2 km using 62.5/125 µm multimode fiber and LC connectors. The corresponding shielded-copper connection is limited to 100 m.
  • Does the 1 Gbps switch backbone make the P0972VA port a gigabit interface?
No. The ATS-to-switch link operates at 100 Mbps full duplex, while the Nodebus side operates at 10 Mbps. The 1 Gbps rate applies to interswitch communication.
  • Which station counts must be separated when sizing a P0972VA network?
One ATS supports up to 63 stations on its Nodebus. The Mesh control network limit is up to 1920 combined Nodebus and Mesh stations; it is a system-wide limit rather than an additional per-ATS allocation.
  • What hardware is needed to form a minimal network around P0972VA?
The minimum arrangement includes an ATS, optionally redundant, a Mesh-based workstation to host it, and Mesh Ethernet switches.
  • How is the letterbug identity of P0972VA assigned or read?
The I/A Series Letterbug Configurator communicates with the module by infrared. It assigns the soft letterbug and reads the letterbug or hardware ID.
