Use a Bently Nevada 3300 XL NSv system when a standard 5 mm or 8 mm proximity system cannot work within the machine's counterbore, side-view, rear-view, shaft-diameter, or target-size constraints. NSv is commonly used on centrifugal air, refrigeration, and process gas compressors with fluid-film bearings and restricted probe access. It is not a general-purpose upgrade for standard proximity measurements. Choosing NSv also means accepting its 1.5 mm (59 mil) linear range and confirming target calibration, a matched probe, extension cable, and Proximitor® Sensor, environmental limits, and the exact geometry encoded in part numbers such as 330910-00-08-50-01-05.

Use NSv Only When the Installation Envelope Requires It

The NSv family addresses specific mechanical constraints. Consider NSv when the machine drawing shows that a standard probe's sensing field would be disturbed by the mounting bore, a nearby metal shoulder, a small shaft, or a small axial target.

Typical NSv applications include:

  • a restricted counterbore around the probe tip;
  • limited side-view or rear-view clearance;
  • radial vibration or position measurement on a small shaft;
  • axial position measurement on a small flat target;
  • closely spaced X-Y probes where cross-talk must be evaluated;
  • limited cabinet space that favors a thin DIN-rail Proximitor Sensor.

These conditions explain why the NSv family exists; they do not confirm that a given NSv part number fits a specific machine. The target, bore, probe separation, thread, insertion depth, case length, cable route, and available measurement range must each be verified individually.

Qualification Gate 1: Target, Bore, and Probe Separation

Start with a dimensioned installation drawing. These dimensions affect the electromagnetic field at the probe tip, so a matching thread alone is not enough.

Geometry Check Published NSv Value Selection Impact
Flat target diameter 8.9 mm (0.35 in) minimum; 13 mm (0.51 in) recommended minimum Targets smaller than 13 mm can shift the scale factor and may require a reduced gap or application review
Counterbore diameter 9.5 mm (0.37 in) minimum; 13 mm (0.51 in) recommended minimum Bores smaller than 13 mm can shift the scale factor at larger gaps
Shaft diameter with standard X-Y placement 30 mm (1.18 in) minimum A smaller shaft can change the scale factor and increase cross-talk between adjacent probes
Shaft diameter with probes offset axially by 23 mm (0.91 in) 20 mm (0.79 in) minimum Confirm the offset arrangement on the machine drawing
Axial probe-tip separation At least 25 mm (0.98 in) Reduces cross-talk between adjacent probes
Radial probe-tip separation At least 23 mm (0.91 in) Reduces cross-talk in radial vibration arrangements

An absolute minimum is not the same as a recommended minimum. A dimension that meets the absolute minimum can still shift the average scale factor or shorten the usable linear range. Treat any dimension below the recommended minimum as a trigger for engineering review, not an automatic pass.

For a compressor with a small shaft, record both the shaft diameter and the probe spacing. For an axial position measurement point, record the flat target diameter and the full expected movement relative to the installed cold gap. For a counterbored mounting hole, record the bore diameter and the depth over which surrounding metal remains close to the probe tip.

Qualification Gate 2: Required Measurement Range

NSv provides a nominal 1.5 mm (59 mil) linear range from approximately 0.25 to 1.75 mm (10 to 69 mil), with a recommended gap setting of 1.0 mm (40 mil). Its nominal scale factor is 7.87 V/mm (200 mV/mil). A standard 3300 XL 8 mm system offers a 2.0 mm (80 mil) linear range. If the expected static movement plus dynamic motion, with the site's required margin, cannot stay within the NSv range, NSv is the wrong choice.

Define the required range from the machine's own data:

  1. Determine the expected static change in shaft or target position across startup, loading, and shutdown.
  2. Add the dynamic vibration or position excursion that the channel must measure.
  3. Include the site's approved allowance for installation tolerance, thermal growth, and abnormal operation.
  4. Compare the resulting envelope with the NSv linear range around the planned cold gap.

If the required envelope exceeds the NSv range, a larger probe or a different transducer family may be necessary. A small target or tight bore does not justify accepting a range that cannot cover the machine's movement.

Translate the Machine Drawing into an NSv Probe Configuration

NSv standard-mount probe part numbers follow the pattern base-AA-BB-CC-DD-EE. The base number identifies the thread and armor. The remaining fields define the unthreaded length, case length, total probe length, connector and cable construction, and agency approval option.

Base Mounting Thread Probe Cable Armor
330901 1/4-28 UNF Unarmored
330902 1/4-28 UNF Armored
330904 M8 x 1 Armored
330908 3/8-24 UNF Unarmored
330910 M10 x 1 Armored

For English (inch) part numbers, AA and BB are specified in 0.1 in increments, and the case length (BB) must be at least 0.7 in longer than the unthreaded length (AA). For metric part numbers, both fields are specified in 10 mm increments, and the case length must be at least 20 mm longer than the unthreaded length. The current NSv ordering table lists CC total length options of 0.5, 1.0, 5.0, and 7.0 m.

The example part numbers below show how each field captures a different mechanical choice. They are not interchangeable.

Part Number Decoded Configuration What to Verify

330908-00-67-10-01-00 3/8-24 UNF, unarmored; 0 in unthreaded; 6.7 in case; 1.0 m standard cable; ClickLoc with connector protector; no approvals Check the long case for insertion access, support, and removal clearance
330901-00-08-05-11-05 1/4-28 UNF, unarmored; 0 in unthreaded; 0.8 in case; 0.5 m FluidLoc cable; ClickLoc with connector protector; multiple approvals Confirm that FluidLoc cable is required and that the 0.8 in case seats correctly

Do not identify a probe by its total length alone. The four 1.0 m probes in this table differ in thread, armor, case length, connector protection, and approval status.

Match the Conversion Path to the Installed System

3300 RAM installations and 3000-series or 7000-series 190 installations follow different conversion paths.

Bently Nevada's current NSv documentation states that the NSv probe and extension cable are mechanically and electrically compatible with the earlier 3300 RAM probe and extension cable. In a 3300 RAM conversion, the existing probe, cable, and monitoring components may therefore remain in service, provided that the applicable OEM instructions cover the exact arrangement and the correct NSv Proximitor Sensor is selected.

A conversion from a 3000-series or 7000-series 190 system has stricter requirements. The probe, extension cable, and Proximitor Sensor must all be replaced with NSv components. Similar-looking connectors or matching scale-factor labels do not make a mixed system acceptable.

Before approving either path, record the part numbers of the installed probe, extension cable, Proximitor Sensor, and monitor input, along with the system length, target material, and applicable drawings. If any part number is missing, leave the conversion decision open.

Reject an NSv Candidate That Fails the Environmental Review

Check environmental suitability once the geometry and range gates are passed.

  • Liquids at connectors: Use documented connector protection. Silicone tape is not recommended where the probe-to-cable connection is exposed to turbine oil.
  • Oil wicking through the cable: Specify FluidLoc cable where oil could otherwise wick through the cable and out of the machine.
  • Chemical media: Confirm compatibility with the probe tip, seals, cable, armor, and process contaminants. Strongly acidic or alkaline media can damage the tip assembly.
  • Pressure boundary: NSv probes are designed to seal against differential pressure, but standard probes are not individually pressure-tested before shipment. If the application requires a pressure seal, specify an approved design and test basis.
  • Temperature: Check the probe, extension cable, and Proximitor Sensor limits separately. Sustained probe exposure below −34 °C (−30 °F) can affect the pressure seal, even though the published operating range extends lower.
  • Cable routing: Maintain a minimum bend radius of 25.4 mm (1.0 in), and protect the route from abrasion, windage, oil spray, and unsupported movement.
  • Electrostatic discharge: Follow the site's ESD handling procedures when working with the Proximitor Sensor terminals and connectors.

An approval option does not replace this review. The probe, extension cable, Proximitor Sensor, barriers or isolators, wiring method, enclosure, and area-classification documentation must all be covered by a single approved installation design.

Complete the NSv Fit Record Before Requesting a Quote

An NSv inquiry should include the geometry behind the selection, not just a part number. Provide the drawing dimensions that justify choosing NSv and a full description of the installed measurement system.

Information Required What to Provide What It Confirms
Restricted geometry Counterbore diameter and depth, side-view and rear-view clearance, target or shaft diameter Why NSv is required
Motion envelope Expected static travel, dynamic amplitude, cold gap, and engineering margin Whether the 1.5 mm range is adequate
Mounting interface Thread, bracket thickness, insertion depth, case support, and removal path The base number, AA, and BB
Probe construction Armor, standard or FluidLoc cable, connector protector, total probe length CC and DD
Installed system Probe, extension cable, Proximitor Sensor, monitor channel, and target material That the system is not an unsupported mix
Environment and approvals Temperature, media, pressure, area classification, destination country, and approval documents Environmental requirements and EE

The 330910-00-08-50-01-05 product page includes a quote request form. Attach your completed NSv fit record to the inquiry. We will confirm the part number, condition, availability, included items, documentation, warranty, and quotation terms for the unit offered. Final engineering and installation decisions remain with your site's authorized engineering team.

Confirm the Final NSv Fit Decision

Select NSv only when measured machine geometry demands its small-target or restricted-clearance capability and the required motion fits within its 1.5 mm range. Then translate the drawing into the exact thread, case length, cable, connector, and approval configuration. A complete record for 330910-00-08-50-01-05, or any other NSv probe, must also identify the extension cable, NSv Proximitor Sensor, target material, environmental exposure, and legacy conversion path.

If any of these inputs is missing, the order belongs in engineering review, not in procurement based on assumed compatibility.
