This is common in large steam turbines, compressors, and motors that use sleeve-type bearings. A proximity sensor adjusted to a very short range is often used as a touch switch.
• What is the difference between proximity switch and proximity sensor?

On the other hand, a proximity switch is a specific component which opens or closes the electrical circuit when the sensor detects the absence or presence of an object.
