Overview Manuals Common Applications Product Precautions
The 1756-RM introduced by Rockwell Automation under the Allen-Bradley brand, is an enhanced redundancy control unit for ControlLogix systems that plays a critical role in executing controller-level redundancy architectures. To guarantee absolute real-time data synchronization, the module is equipped with an LC-type single-mode fiber optic connector.
    • Achieves 100 Mbps data mirroring via a dedicated LC fiber-optic connection
    • Works seamlessly with a wide array of chassis configurations and controllers
    • Certified under numerous global standards for safety and reliability
1756-RM is configured with one (1) factory single-mode LC fiber optic connector to execute high-speed underlying backplane communication through a dedicated high-bandwidth fiber optic patch cord, maintaining real-time data cross-loading and mirror synchronization between the primary and backup controller chassis. For operational status monitoring, the front faceplate compactly integrates multi-status LED diagnostic indicators, including PRI (Primary), COM (Communication), and OK, which provide a direct visual assessment of the overall health of the system redundancy, fiber link continuity, and the functional state of the hardware itself without accessing upper-level software.

Acting as a coordinator in a redundant architecture, hot-swapping this module while the redundancy synchronization is active is strictly prohibited, and single-mode fiber installations must adhere strictly to bend radius standards to guarantee seamless millisecond-level switchovers during single-point failures.

Oil & Gas Upstream Extraction
Used in Emergency Shutdown Systems (ESD) for offshore drilling platforms and onshore oil/gas wellheads, ensuring zero-interruption operation of the redundant control system to execute safety protection during sudden well kicks.

Petroleum Refining & Petrochemicals
Used for continuous process control of ethylene cracking furnaces, distillation columns, and reactors, preventing runaway chemical reactions or unplanned plant-wide shutdowns caused by primary controller failures.

Thermal & Nuclear Power Generation
Used in Boiler Management Systems (BMS) and Digital Electro-Hydraulic (DEH) control systems for steam turbines, securing the operational continuity of critical generator units tied to the grid and maintaining busbar voltage stability.

Mining & Bulk Material Conveying
Used for synchronized control of large underground mine hoists and multi-kilometer heavy-duty overland belt conveyor clusters, preventing belt tearing from heavy-load shutdowns while the backup chassis stands ready.

Pharmaceuticals & Biological Vaccine Production
Used for centralized control of long-cycle processes in bioreactors and constant-temperature fermenters, safeguarding data integrity throughout multi-month fermentation cycles to prevent entire batches of costly medicine from being scrapped due to system downtime.
First, the hardware models and firmware versions (Redundancy Bundle) of the 1756-RM, CPUs, and all communication modules in both chassis must be identical and installed in perfectly symmetrical slots; otherwise, the system will fail to establish data synchronization.

Second, you must use the officially designated 1756-RMC fiber-optic cables and ensure the LC connectors are clean and dust-free with no excessive bending to prevent signal attenuation from causing sync loss.

Lastly, before performing hot-swapping (RIUP) or triggering a manual switchover, verify that the partner chassis is in a perfect "Synchronized" state to prevent accidental production line shutdowns caused by operating during a system fault or lost synchronization.

Technical notes

Technical notes

The 1756-RM, introduced under the Allen-Bradley brand by Rockwell Automation, is a chassis-mounted redundancy module for ControlLogix systems utilized extensively throughout demanding industrial operations. The electrical parameters of this hardware are precisely defined, with its current consumption strictly limited to 4 mA at 1.2 VDC, 1.2 A at 5.1 VDC, and 120 mA at 24 VDC. In terms of physical construction, the module offers a significant lightweight advantage, with a total physical weight of just 0.29 kg (0.64 lbs), facilitating rapid deployment on control cabinet chassis in the field.

FAQS

  • What is the 1756-RM?
The 1756-RM is a hardware redundancy module designed for Rockwell's Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLC systems.
  • What is the primary purpose of the 1756-RM?
Its core purpose is to provide fault tolerance protection in critical industrial processes.
  • Which category of automation hardware does the 1756-RM belong to?
The Allen-Bradley 1756-RM is a hardware redundancy synchronization module specialized for ControlLogix PLC systems, achieving millisecond-level seamless switchover via fiber-optic links to ensure zero downtime in critical industrial processes.
  • How do you use the 1756-RM within a ControlLogix system?
You need to prepare two identical chassis and insert one 1756-RM module into each. Then, connect the two modules using a 1756-RMC fiber-optic cable. Once redundancy is enabled in the Studio 5000 software, the modules will automatically synchronize data between the primary and secondary systems.
  • Does the 1756-RM module require standalone ladder logic programming?
No. The 1756-RM is a pure hardware-level synchronization and switchover module, with its underlying logic controlled by Rockwell system firmware. Engineers only need to check the redundancy enablement in the controller properties without writing specific switchover code.
