The 3300/46-46-04-02-01 is a Ramp Differential Expansion Monitor for the Bently Nevada 3300 Machinery Monitoring System. It continuously measures the axial growth of a rotating shaft relative to the machine casing by processing signals from two proximity transducer channels. The monitor combines the Channel A and Channel B measurements into a differential expansion value and provides Alert and Danger alarm functions for monitoring thermal growth and rotor movement during machine startup, normal operation, and shutdown.
Dual-Probe Measurement
Configurable Alarm Control
Continuous Status Indication
The 3300/46-46-04-02-01 determines differential expansion by processing signals from two proximity transducers positioned to monitor ramp surfaces on the rotor. By comparing the measurements from both probes, the monitor calculates the relative axial movement between the rotor and the machine casing, allowing differential expansion to be tracked over a wider measurement range than conventional collar-based methods.
This measurement technique is particularly suitable for large steam turbines and other rotating machines where direct collar monitoring is impractical or where extended monitoring ranges are required. The monitor continuously displays both the magnitude and direction of differential expansion while providing configurable Alert and Danger alarm functions to support machinery protection and condition monitoring.

Monitors axial thermal expansion in high/low-pressure cylinders of coal-fired steam turbines to prevent rotor-to-stator rubs.
Nuclear Power Industry
Monitors main shaft differential expansion in saturated steam turbines of nuclear islands to ensure continuous safety.
Hydroelectric Power Industry
Monitors axial displacement of hydro-turbine generators caused by water hammer and temperature changes.
Petroleum Refining Industry
Monitors axial thermal displacement of large flue gas turbines and rich gas compressors in FCC units.
Coal Chemical Industry
Monitors relative rotor displacement of syngas compressors and main air compressors in air separation units (ASU).
Cement Manufacturing Industry
Monitors axial mechanical displacement of steam turbines in cement kiln waste heat recovery systems.
Ensure sensors match the range (-46) and calibrate the loop regularly. Wiring must meet explosion-proof (-04) and barrier (-02) codes with no hot-swapping allowed. Enable Trip Multiply during startup and check the NOT OK LED for loop faults.
Technical notes
Technical notes
The 3300/46-46-04-02-01 is commonly used in steam turbines, gas turbines, turbo-generators, centrifugal compressors, and other large rotating machinery where monitoring differential thermal expansion is essential. It helps maintenance personnel observe rotor growth during startup, steady-state operation, and shutdown, providing continuous condition monitoring to support machinery protection and maintenance planning.
