The RAI02J Redundant Analog Input module processes up to 16 high-level, group isolated, analog input field signals. Each channel is independently configurable for either 4 to 20 mA or 1 to +5 VDC ranges. FC 221 (I/O Device Definition) sets AI module operating parameters and each input channel is configured using FC 222 (Analog Input Channel) to set individual input channel parameters such as engineering units, High/Low alarm limits, etc.
Max 4 sec vars per analog input CH
Sec HART variables available to control logic
12 to 16-Bit (with polarity) A/D resolutionV
A/D resolution of each channel is configurable from 12 to 16 bits with polarity. The RAI02 module has one A/D converter for all 16 input channels. The module will update 16 input channels in 100 msecs. In current mode, the RAI02 module supports HART v5.4 instruments and provides short circuit protection by limiting current to a maximum of 96 mA.
The SD Series includes a set of high-performance, scalable process controllers that support a plant’s total control requirements, from discrete and continuous, to batch and advanced control applications. Supported by a comprehensive range of I/O options, the SD Series delivers powerful, versatile and scalable automation solutions for plant applications of all sizes and requirements.
The common controller environment executes demanding process control applications that are both data and program intensive. Redundancy options are available at all levels resulting in maximum flexibility and availability.
Controllers connect to both DIN style and traditional Rack I/O modules. Intelligent I/O devices are seamlessly integrated through industry standard fieldbuses and networks with resident information used in control and higher level applications for tighter and more reliable process solutions. Inclusion of native turbine specific modules deliver a fully integrated single-vendor solution for all aspects of turbine automation within the plant automation platform.

Thermal Power
Installed in the acquisition loops of boiler drum water level, main steam pressure, and furnace temperature transmitters to provide high-availability redundant analog data for the turbine control system.
Petroleum Refining
Cohesively collects wired electrical signals of oil levels, fractionating tower top pressures, and pipeline oil transfer pump flow rates within non-explosion-proof control cabinets of crude distillation or catalytic cracking units.
Hydroelectric Power
Installed in the loops of upstream headwater level gauges, governor high-pressure oil pump pressure transmitters, and guide bearing lube oil tank temperature transmitters of hydro-generator units.
Biopharmaceutical and Fermentation Industry
Used for dynamic data polling of pH transmitters, dissolved oxygen sensors, and sterile air supply main flow signals inside large stainless steel fermenters.
Pulp and Paper Manufacturing
Collects analog electrical signals from steam header pressures, pulp consistency transmitters, and coater tension sensors at the drive control periphery of large modern rewinders and multi-section drying cylinders.
Wastewater Treatment Industry
Captures continuous current signals from aeration tank dissolved oxygen (DO) sensors, sludge return flowmeters, and aeration blower pressure transmitters to achieve environmental compliance discharge control.
During the use of RAI02J, it must be rigidly plugged into the dedicated HBS01 or VBS01 redundant base and have its mechanical clips locked to prevent poor contact on the underlying HN800 bus gold-finger contacts caused by high-frequency vibration.
Although this card supports live hot-swapping, when replacing a faulty module online, you must ensure that its paired redundant backup module is in a normal "Run" status to avoid causing disturbances in the control loops.
Furthermore, the 4-20 mA or 1-5 V signal type for each channel must be kept strictly consistent between the backend software and the base jumpers, and the diagnostic data of the onboard HART communication should be regularly checked via Composer software while maintaining the cabinet temperature below 60°C to prevent premature component aging from high-density channel heat accumulation.

Technical notes
Technical notes
As a core component within the SD Series I/O hardware matrix of the ABB Ability Symphony Plus Distributed Control System (DCS), it achieves high-speed and high-precision wired connectivity between field instruments and the central control system through an advanced electrical architecture. In terms of physical structure, the module is enclosed in a compact DIN-rail plug-in plastic housing where the gold-finger contacts at its bottom can snap rigidly into the HN800 internal high-speed I/O base bus. This setup achieves a full 16-channel data polling and dynamic refresh between the module and the main control CPU once every 100 milliseconds. At the signal pathway level, the RAI02J integrates high-resolution 12-to-16-bit analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion chips internally. The independent isolation circuit of each channel supports free definition via backend software as either a 4-to-20 mA DC current loop or a 1-to-+5 VDC voltage input, while simultaneously distributing 24 VDC loop excitation power directly to field two-wire transmitters through the base terminals.
It is a 16-channel redundant analog input module with HART communication functionality in the ABB Symphony Plus DCS system.
Where is the RAI02J module primarily installed?
It must be rigidly plugged into a dedicated SD series module termination unit (base, such as HBS01 or VBS01) inside the control cabinet.
How to properly use the RAI02J module on industrial sites?
Connect the field smart transmitters via two-wire shielded cables, assign the corresponding channels using function codes (such as FC 221) in the backend software, and enable data cycling.
What types of field electrical signals can RAI02J receive?
Each channel can be independently configured to receive standard 4-20 mA current signals or 1 to +5 VDC voltage signals.
Does RAI02J support hot-swapping?
Yes, this module features a DIN-rail bus design that allows online insertion and removal for replacement while the control cabinet is powered and the system runs uninterrupted.
