The SP3401 is an AC inverter drive manufactured by Emerson Control Techniques and belongs to the Unidrive SP series. As a single hardware control unit, this drive contains an integrated solutions platform and is composed of an aluminum heatsink, a built-in EMC filter, a universal encoder port, a standard 2-wire RS485 serial communication port, and three expansion slots for plug-in SM option modules. This hardware unit includes a Smartcard for parameter and PLC program storage from the factory but is provided without an operation keypad.

Based on the coding rules in the official technical specifications, each digit in this full model number represents specific factory hardware configurations. The letters SP represent the Unidrive SP series product line and the digit 3 represents the physical chassis size as Frame 3. The digit 4 represents a rated supply voltage range of 380 to 480 Vac three-phase AC power and the digits 01 represent the specific current rating under this frame which corresponds to a maximum continuous output current of 35A under Normal Duty and 32A under Heavy Duty. The SP3401 drive includes a Smartcard memory device to backup parameter sets and PLC programs for duplication across multiple drives.
During deceleration, dynamic braking resistors dissipate converted electrical energy to prevent DC bus overvoltage trips. The ohmic value and power rating of the required braking resistor depend on the application duty cycle. Due to the Frame 3 specification of the SP3401, a larger external braking resistor is utilized for energy dissipation instead of heatsink-mounted resistor packages restricted to frame sizes 0 to 2.

Before operating the SP3401 drive verify the 380 to 480 Vac 3-phase AC input voltage. Apply parameter derating based on either Normal Duty 35A or Heavy Duty 32A configuration. For dynamic braking this Frame 3 drive requires a large external braking resistor.
The use of heatsink-mounted resistors restricted to frames 0 to 2 is strictly prohibited. When backing up PLC programs via the provided Smartcard verify data compatibility between the control board and the memory card. Field wiring must strictly adhere to grounding and shielding specifications for the built-in RFI filter to suppress electromagnetic interference.
