The AI02J Analog Input module processes up to 16 high level, group isolated, analog input field signals. Each channel is independently configurable for either 4 to 20 mA or 1 to +5 VDC ranges. FC 221 (I/O Device Definition) sets AI module operating parameters and each input channel is configured using FC 222 (Analog Input Channel) to set individual input channel parameters such as engineering units, High/Low alarm limits, etc.

A/D resolution of each channel is configurable from 12 to 16 bits with polarity. The AI02J module has one A/D converter for all 16 input channels. The module will update 16 input channels in 100 msecs. In current mode, the AI02J module supports HART v5.4 instruments and provides short circuit protection by limiting current to a maximum of 96 mA. The AI02J module will also detect an open circuit in less than 5 seconds. The module requires a continuous power supply of 24 VDC ± 10%, drawing a typical current of 100 mA through the POWER TB connection on cHBX01L or VBX01T termination units.

It features a physical 1x16 group isolation structure providing 1500 V galvanically isolated protection between the field signals and the logic circuitry for up to 1 minute. Under current mode, the input impedance is 250 Ω, while voltage mode utilizes 250 kΩ or greater. The single internal HART modem extracts up to 24 secondary variables total, with a maximum of 4 variables per channel and a typical update rate of 2.5 seconds. Hardware diagnostics are available locally via the front plate mini USB interface and status LEDs, or remotely via the HN800 device diagnostic channel.

 During field installation the module must be securely snapped onto its matching SD series DIN rail base, and short-circuiting or grounding signal wires before isolating external channel power is strictly prohibited to prevent burning the sampling resistors.

Since this quick-response module is frequently deployed in critical interlock loops, the corresponding field loop must be switched to manual control or its soft interlocks temporarily bypassed prior to an overhaul or hot-swapping, avoiding sudden system trips caused by signal steps during insertion or removal. Additionally, periodically review its built-in HART smart diagnostic data to promptly clear sporadic channel open-circuits or instrument configuration conflicts.
