Information
- The signal module connects operator-station alarm processing to physical horns, buzzers or lights and adds an independent hardware watchdog path.
Host interface: 32-bit, 5 V PCI slot
Signaling: Three outputs, three binary inputs and watchdog
The hardware watchdog is retriggered cyclically by WinCC Runtime through the driver. If retriggering stops, for example because the computer fails, the watchdog triggers the configured alarm. Audible signals can be acknowledged through software or an external hardware acknowledgment button. The external function signals use isolated relay contacts or optocouplers, and the externally supplied 24 V DC circuit requires customer-provided 1 A protection.
The front 25-pin Sub-D connector carries the signaling and watchdog functions; the 9-pin connector is not used for this application. Message classes and signal tags are assigned to the three physical outputs in the horn configuration. The module requires a suitable product status, such as ES4 or later, and a driver matched to the operating system and WinCC release. Commissioning should test each output, acknowledgment path and watchdog response independently.

Signaling scope: Physical alarm devices, acknowledgment and watchdog behavior are engineered functions of the complete station. Validate their wiring and event assignments separately.
-
Acoustic annunciation
Drive configured horns or buzzers through the signaling outputs and verify message-class assignment and acknowledgment behavior. -
Optical annunciation
Use the available outputs for compatible external lights. Check the protected external supply and isolated contact circuit. -
Station supervision
Use the hardware watchdog to detect loss of cyclic Runtime retriggering and activate the configured fault signal. -
Hardware acknowledgment
Integrate an external acknowledgment button where required and verify the relationship between reset inputs, assigned tags and output reset.
Use a 5 V, 32-bit PCI slot. A 3.3 V slot is not suitable.
Check the card label and required ES status for the installed WinCC signal-module implementation.
Install the driver appropriate to the operating system and WinCC/PCS 7 version.
Apply the required 1 A protection to the externally supplied 24 V DC signaling circuit.
Configure each computer independently; project duplication does not copy the signal-module settings.
Test the three outputs, hardware acknowledgment and watchdog before handing the station back to operations.

Technical notes
System relationship: Match the WinCC/PCS 7 version and signal-module driver.
Applicability: These functions apply to the 5 V PCI signal module in a supported WinCC/PCS 7 operator-station configuration. Match product status, operating system and driver before installation.

FAQ View All FAQ
-
Which PCI slot does 6DS1916-8RR require? It requires a 32-bit PCI slot with 5 V signaling. It cannot operate in a 3.3 V PCI slot.
-
How many external devices can 6DS1916-8RR signal? It can control up to three external signaling devices, such as horns, buzzers or lights.
-
Does 6DS1916-8RR provide binary inputs?Yes. The module includes three additional binary inputs.
-
How does the watchdog in 6DS1916-8RR operate?WinCC Runtime cyclically retriggers the hardware timer through the driver. If retriggering stops, the watchdog triggers the configured alarm.
-
Which connector carries the functions of 6DS1916-8RR?The 25-pin Sub-D connector carries the watchdog and signaling functions. The 9-pin connector is not used for this application.
-
Can 6DS1916-8RR acknowledge alarms from a hardware button?Yes. Audible signals can be acknowledged through an external hardware button as well as through software control.
-
What external circuit protection is required with 6DS1916-8RR?The externally provided 24 V DC signaling supply must have customer-provided 1 A protection.
-
Are the settings of 6DS1916-8RR copied by project duplication? No. The signal module must be configured separately on each computer, including the output and message assignments.
