The 9470/32-16-11 digital input/ output module for Zone 1 has 16 channels which can be used in pairs for Ex i operation as inputs for contacts and NAMUR proximity switches (EN 60947- 5-6) or as outputs for indicator lamps and low- power solenoid valves. Eight inputs can be used for frequencies of up to 20 kHz, and four can be used for detecting the direction of rotation. All inputs/ outputs are short- circuit proof and galvanically separated from the system.
16 channels can be used in pairs as inputs or outputs
Module in Zone 1 can be replaced without having to discon nect the power supply
Intrinsically safe Ex ia IIC inputs/ outputs with line fault moni toring and an LED fault and status display for each channel
The 9470/32-16-11 digital input/output module functions as an intrinsically safe (Ex i) hardware component permanently installed within Zone 1 hazardous environments, providing 16 independent measurement and control channels. For physical configuration in application, these channels are capable of being utilized in pairs for modular pairing setups, serving as inputs for dry contacts and NAMUR proximity switches compliant with the EN 60947-5-6 standard, or alternatively, toggling as control voltage outputs for intrinsically safe indicator lamps and low-power solenoid valves.
For dynamic signal acquisition requirements, the hardware opens 8 dedicated input channels capable of directly receiving and processing high-frequency signals up to 20 kHz, alongside 4 input channels equipped with integrated direction-of-rotation tracking circuits to evaluate physical mechanical rotation. In terms of electrical protection and network topology, all input/output termination points maintain complete short-circuit-proof characteristics and feature full galvanic separation from the underlying automation system architecture, blocking electrical energy transfer between hazardous and safe areas.

Oil & Gas
Installed on offshore drilling platforms and onshore oil manifold areas to acquire limit switch contact signals from surface safety valves (SSVs) and drive low-power solenoid valves.
Petroleum Refining
Deployed in Zone 1 hazardous areas surrounding catalytic cracking units and hydroreactors to receive open/closed status data from NAMUR proximity switches on process piping.
Coal Chemical
Provisions intrinsically safe (Ex i) signal acquisition for valve positioning switches in high-temperature and dusty environments around gasifiers, blocking hazardous energy transfer.
Fine Chemical & Synthetic Rubber Industry
Provisions redundant channel switching feedback in pairs for emergency shutdown valves (ESD) of polymerization reactors to prevent valve sticking from causing process overpressure.
Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Infrastructure Industry
Deployed at hydrogen refueling stations and high-pressure hydrogen storage bottle racks to receive EN 60947-5-6 compliant intrinsically safe switching signals, enforcing electrical protection in high-leakage-risk zones.
Marine Engineering & Explosion-Proof Vessel Industry
Used for cargo oil tank level switch data acquisition on LNG carriers and oil tankers, leveraging its full galvanic separation layout to protect the primary bus network.
During installation, the module must be snapped onto the dedicated BusRail, and operation outside the hazardous working conditions specified for Zone 1 gases, vapors, or dusts is strictly prohibited. For wiring, ensure that the input-side contacts or NAMUR proximity switches strictly comply with intrinsically safe (Ex i) electrical parameter limits. When channels are configured in pairs for voltage outputs and connected to indicator lamps or low-power solenoid valves, the loop current and load impedance must not exceed the module's intrinsically safe nominal ratings defined for hazardous areas.
In addition, when utilizing the 8 dedicated channels for high-frequency dynamic data or rotation tracking up to 20 kHz, shielded twisted-pair cables must be implemented to counteract electromagnetic interference, and any disruption to the full galvanic separation physical structure between the field measurement loops and the underlying bus system is strictly forbidden.
R-STAHL 9470/32-16-11 (IS1+) is a 16-channel intrinsically safe (Ex i) digital input/output module permanently installed within Zone 1 hazardous environments. The hardware supports channel configuration in pairs, serving as inputs for dry contacts and NAMUR proximity switches compliant with the EN 60947-5-6 standard, or switching as control voltage outputs for indicator lamps and low-power solenoid valves. For dynamic signal acquisition, the module exposes 8 dedicated input channels supporting high-frequency pulses up to 20 kHz, alongside 4 channels with integrated direction-of-rotation logic. Furthermore, all termination points maintain short-circuit-proof protection and feature full galvanic separation from the underlying automation system, allowing instantaneous connection via hot-swappable installation onto the dedicated BusRail while mapping channel statuses through front-facing LED indicators.
9470/32-16-11 is an industrial-grade intrinsically safe (Ex i) digital input/output module manufactured by R. STAHL. It is suitable for hazardous environments classified as Zone 1.
