Overview Manuals Common Applications Product Precautions
The MVI56E-MCM is a high-availability, single-slot enhanced network interface module purpose-built for its dedicated control platform chassis. Serving as a robust protocol bridge, it seamlessly interconnects the main controller with various Modbus devices via configurable Master and Slave serial communication. This highly versatile module supports installation in both local and remote chassis, and features an industrialized design rated to withstand operational temperatures from 0 to 60°C and storage conditions from -40 to 85°C.
    • Choose from various communication modules for the ControlLogix platform
    • The communication module utilizes licensed proprietary backplane technology
    • Integrate into your system using existing Studio 5000 (formerly RSLogix 5000) programming software
The MVI56E-MCM provides local hardware diagnostics and network-based maintenance features, with a physical 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet port on its front panel for independent configuration, troubleshooting, and continuous network packet monitoring. Through the ProSoft Configuration Builder (PCB) utility, technicians can directly read real-time Modbus error counters, diagnostic event logs, and serial line sniffing data over the network, connecting legacy Modbus RTU/ASCII infrastructures with high-availability industrial control networks. The module is backward compatible, supporting hot-swapping and electronic keying, and serves as a direct replacement for the legacy MVI56-MCM module to reduce Mean Time to Repair (MTTR).

The module contains a 10,000-word user database to aggregate, map, and buffer data packets from multiple field devices simultaneously, optimizing backplane block transfers without adding execution delay to the primary ControlLogix cyclic control logic. It integrates into the Rockwell Automation programming environment via Add-On Instructions (AOI) and pre-configured User-Defined Data Types (UDT) within the Studio 5000 software. This allows technical personnel to complete communication port parameter configuration, Modbus command polling sequence control, and floating-point data scaling directly inside the controller's tag database.

Power and Energy Management
Used to collect Modbus data from multi-function power meters, smart circuit breakers, and transformer monitors into the main control system.

Water and Wastewater Treatment
Used to interface with field ultrasonic flowmeters, dissolved oxygen analyzers, and variable frequency drives of various water pumps.

Oil and Gas Extraction
Used in wellhead control panels to interface with SCADA systems, reading data from crude oil custody transfer meters and multiphase flow meters.

Chemical and Petrochemical Industry
Used to read live process variables from gas detectors, loss-in-weight feeders, and temperature multiplexers in hazardous environments.

Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology
Used to monitor chillers, humidifiers, and airborne particle counters within cleanroom facility infrastructure.

Metallurgy and Steel Production
Connected to infrared pyrometers, EAF electrode regulators, and gas analyzers in heating furnaces and blast furnaces.
When operating the MVI56E-MCM, ensure its wiring terminals strictly match the RS-232/485 physical pinouts of field devices, and install 120-ohm terminating resistors at both ends of long-distance RS-485 buses. When importing AOI and UDT into Studio 5000, verify that the firmware versions match the controller project. For modules deployed in remote racks, properly configure the controller's RPI time to prevent backplane block transfer timeouts.
