Proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers use only renewable electricity and water to produce green hydrogen through a process known as electrolysis.The hydrogen produced can be stored in gas or liquid form, or released into the gas pipeline grid. It is used as a clean vehicle fuel, or for use in a wide range of industrial processes to reduce emissions from heavy industry.

The hydrogen produced by electrolysis has variety of uses. It can be fed into the gas pipeline grid to reduce or replace natural gas; it can be used on-site in heavy industrial applications such as steel manufacturing, power plants or chemical plants. Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) are deemed to be the future of the automotive market, especially in the heavy-duty transportation industry. These vehicles use a battery powertrain similar to a battery electric vehicle (BEV), but with a smaller battery that is continuously powered from a fuel cell. A fuel cell performs the opposite reaction to an electrolyzer. Hydrogen is fed in and combined with air. In the presence of a platinum-based catalyst, water is formed and electricity is generated. When used in an FCEV, it constantly charges the battery while the hydrogen fuel acts as a range extender. Therefore, the experience of driving an FCEV is more similar to a diesel or gasoline car, which can be driven ong-term charging and parking, and can be refueled quickly through the pump

 

Strategies, hydrogen networks and hydrogen valleys are emerging globally. Carbon-free mobility

Mobility leaves its mark -- at least so far. The hydrogen produced by our PEM electrolysis can be used directly in fuel cells, so it is emissions-free and climate-friendly. If carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen (H2) are mixed, high quality syngas is produced. This is a prospective process that combines CO2 emissions and uses them to produce chemical base materials for chemicals, polymers or synthetic fuels. In a PEM electrolyzer, electricity is used in the presence of iridium and platinum based catalysts to split water into its constituent elements; hydrogen and oxygen. If the electrolyzer uses electricity from renewable sources, the hydrogen formed is classified as "green hydrogen," meaning it has a 0% carbon footprint. Renewable energy is often intermittent, and PEM technology has the fastest response time among similar technologies, making it ideal for use with renewable energy. Most of the time, renewable energy is being produced but not utilized, and the use of electrolysis allows this energy to be captured and stored.

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology relies on catalysts, platinum, iridium and alloys containing PGM. It is the use of heterogeneous platinum group metal catalysts that enables PEM technology to provide excellent flexibility (such as fast start-up) and high levels of performance at ambient temperatures. 

 

PGM is a relatively rare metal that trades at relatively high prices. To alleviate this, metals are used in finely dispersed form to maximize the surface area to volume ratio.

Electrolysis and the Hydrogen Economy

The worldwide demand for energy puts increasing pressure on the available carbon sources. The combustion of carbon-based fuels, e.g. natural gas and coal, cannot be sustained indefinitely, as carbon resources become depleted, unless effective technology is developed to recover and re-use the carbon dioxide combustion product.

 

Solutions proposed for this re-use include electrolysis or photo-electrolysis of carbon dioxide with water to species such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen, known as “synthesis gas” (syngas), formic acid or methanol, and the production of methanol, catalytically from carbon dioxide and hydrogen. Such approaches require the use of electricity, either directly or indirectly (hydrogen formed from water electrolysis) in electrolysers, for which currently production is dominated by fossil fuel combustion.

 

Hence for sustainable electrolysis, its future use would need to be based on “renewable” sources (hydro, solar, wind and wave) or on photochemical or photo-biological methods using solar energy sources. Notably such energy sources can be used to generate hydrogen via electrolysis or by use of other technologies.
