Overview Manuals Common Applications Product Precautions
The 1786-TPS is a coaxial T-tap designed for ControlNet network deployment. Equipped with a 1-meter dedicated drop cable, it provides stable and flexible communication network access for various industrial automation devices within the control system through a standard T-topology.
    • Compact straight-line layout
    • No external power supply is required during operation
    • Integrated prefabricated branch line
This assembly consists of an integrated tap body and a fixed-length drop cable. The connectors for the coaxial cable trunk line are arranged linearly opposite each other, making it suitable for flat layout within vertical or horizontal wire ducts inside control cabinets, thereby preventing permanent cable deformation caused by sharp bends. The product comes from the factory equipped with a hard-wired, 1-meter (approximately 3.3-foot) coaxial drop cable at its base. The cable is terminated with a standard BNC male connector for direct locking connection to the physical port on the front panel of the control module.

As a passive physical component, the 1786-TPS requires no external power supply during operation; its internal circuitry only serves to split and route the physical signal waveforms transmitted through the coaxial cables. Even if the PLC module connected to the drop line is powered down or removed, the cable signals on both sides of the main trunk line remain physically continuous through the assembly.

This hardware can be deployed in environments with a relative humidity range of 5% to 95% (non-condensing), withstands an operating temperature range of -25°C to 70°C (-13°F to 158°F), and a storage temperature range of -40°C to 85°C (-40°F to 185°F), complying with physical environmental specifications for various industrial onsite enclosures.

Automotive Manufacturing
Connects PLCs and remote I/O on stamping, welding, and assembly lines to ensure robot synchronization and real-time interlocking on high-speed production lines.

Iron, Steel and Metallurgy Industry
Used in control systems for blast furnaces, converters, and hot-rolling lines to provide deterministic data transmission in harsh high-temperature and high-EMI environments.

Oil and Gas Extraction & Refining
Connects control instruments and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) within explosion-proof enclosures to the main control network on oil platforms, pipeline pump stations, and refineries.

Power and Energy Industry
Implements high-speed time-synchronized communication between high-speed turbine monitoring data and main control systems in coal/gas-fired turbine controls and flue gas desulfurization systems.

Pulp and Paper Industry
Used in continuous high-speed paper machine control to achieve high-precision sectional drive control (VFDs) for drying cylinders and press rolls to prevent paper breaks.

Marine and Ocean Engineering
Used in engine room monitoring, ballast water control, and thruster control systems of ocean freighters or drilling vessels, meeting classification society reliability standards.
When using the 1786-TPS, strict attention must be paid to bend radius, connector torque, and network topology specifications. Avoid over-bending the 1-meter coaxial pigtail cable during installation, and ensure BNC connectors are twisted firmly clockwise to prevent loose connections. 75-ohm terminators (1786-XT) must be installed at both ends of the trunkline. Additionally, keep the cable away from power lines to reduce EMI, and protect unused taps with dust caps.

Technical notes

Technical notes

The AB 1786-TPS is a passive coaxial straight T-tap for ControlNet networks, featuring an integrated 1-meter BNC drop cable to provide 5 Mbps device-level connectivity without interrupting the main trunk. Its compact, straight design is ideal for linear cable routing inside control cabinets. For further product details, please refer to Rockwell Automation's official documentation.

FAQS

  • What is the Allen-Bradley 1786-TPS?
The 1786-TPS is an Allen-Bradley ControlNet coaxial straight T-tap manufactured by Rockwell Automation. It is primarily used to connect automation devices, such as PLCs, to the ControlNet coaxial trunk cable in industrial control systems.
  • What is the primary function of the 1786-TPS?
Its primary function is to provide a physical interface that introduces a drop line using a standard T-topology, enabling high-speed communication access for network node devices without interrupting the main trunk cable signal.
  • How do you correctly use the 1786-TPS tap?
Connect the two ends of the ControlNet trunk cable to the left and right coaxial ports of the 1786-TPS to form the main path, then plug its integrated 1-meter drop cable into the ControlNet port of a PLC communication module (e.g., 1756-CNB) via the BNC connector.
  • How long is the integrated drop cable on the 1786-TPS?
The built-in drop cable has a fixed length of 1 meter (approx. 3.3 feet).
  • Which network type is the 1786-TPS compatible with?
It is exclusively compatible with Rockwell's ControlNet industrial token ring network. It cannot be used with EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, or other third-party industrial networks.
