Overview Manuals Common Applications Product Precautions
The SPAJ140C is a secondary protection relay connected to current transformers. It identifies faults by continuously measuring phase and neutral currents to execute circuit breaker tripping, auto-reclosing, and data logging. The hardware features dual-stage (low/high set) protection with ~60ms/~40ms preset delays, supporting definite time and 6 standard inverse curves (BS 142/IEC 60255 compliant). Additionally, its signals map as contact outputs via a matrix, and it includes 1 external binary input for stage blocking, contact resetting, or remote settings enforcement.
    • Three-phase, high-set phase overcurrent unit with instantaneous or definite time function
    • High-set, non-directional earth-fault unit with instantaneous or definite time function
    • Two heavy-duty and four light-duty output relays with field-selectable configuration
The combined overcurrent and earth-fault relay SPAJ 140 C is intended to be used for the selective short-circuit and earth-fault protection of radial feeders in solidly earthed, resistance earthed or impedance earthed power systems. The integrated protection relay includes a phase overcurrent unit and an earth-fault unit with flexible tripping and signalling facilities. The overcurrent and earth-fault relays can also be used inother applications requiring single-, two or three-phase overcurrent protection and non directional earth-fault protection. The com bined overcurrent and earth-fault relay also fea tures circuit breaker failure protection.

Petroleum Refining Industry
Provides short-circuit and earth-fault protection for power distribution circuits of critical units like catalytic and hydrocracking plants to prevent secondary hazards from electrical sparks.

Steel & Metallurgical Industry
Supplies multi-stage overcurrent protection for blast furnace blower motors and electric arc furnace high-voltage supply lines to handle severe grid load fluctuations.

Thermal Power
Deployed in plant electrical systems (6KV/10KV lines) to protect power supply feeders of critical auxiliary machinery such as large feedwater pumps and draft fans.

Coal Chemical Industry
Offers selective short-circuit and non-directional earth-fault protection for medium-voltage power transformers and distribution grids in gasification islands and ammonia synthesis plants.

Hydroelectric Power
Protects plant excitation transformers and common distribution systems of hydroelectric units, utilizing external binary inputs for remote blocking.

Paper Manufacturing Industry
Secures feeders in medium-voltage switchrooms of high-speed paper machine workshops against short circuits to prevent local power faults from stopping the entire production line.
During wiring, the 1A or 5A rated current must be strictly routed to the matching energizing input terminals, ensuring that the DC breaking capacities of the tripping (5A) and signaling (5A) contacts do not exceed the physical limits for the corresponding voltages (48/110/220 Vdc). In operation, the contact output logic must be properly configured via the internal matrix based on the local protection grid setup, and the activation voltage range of the external binary input interface (terminals 10-11) must be defined using the onboard selector switches.

Furthermore, never supply auxiliary power outside the 18...265 Vdc / 80...265 Vac limits (depending on the installed power module), and regularly verify the operation timing of the 6 standard IDMT curves to maintain the selectivity of the segmented grid protection.

Technical notes

Technical notes

SPAJ140C is a secondary protection relay connected to current transformers that identifies faults by continuously measuring phase and neutral currents, driving circuit breaker tripping, auto-reclosing, and data logging. The hardware features preset start times of ~60 ms for low-set stages and ~40 ms for high-set stages, supporting definite time or 6 inverse time curves (Normal, Very, Extremely, Long-time, RI, and RXIDG compliant with BS 142 and IEC 60255); its start signals map as contact functions via an output matrix, and it includes one external binary input for stage blocking, contact resetting, or remote parameter enforcement.

FAQS

  • What type of device is SPAJ140C?
It is a secondary relay to be connected to the current transformers (CTs) of the protected object.
  • What physical quantities does SPAJ140C continuously measure?
It continuously measures the phase currents and the neutral current of the protected object.
  • What does SPAJ140C do upon detecting a fault?
It starts, trips the circuit breaker, initiates auto-reclosing, provides an alarm, and records fault data, etc.
  • Under what conditions does the high-set stage (I0>>) of the earth-fault unit in SPAJ140C operate?
It delivers a start signal after ~40 ms when the set current is exceeded, and operates once the set operate time elapses.
  • What types of time characteristics does SPAJ140C support?
The low-set stages may be given definite time or inverse definite minimum time (IDMT) characteristics.
